William Stanfill

William Sidney “Sid” Stanfill (March 26, 1924 – July 14, 1943) was a soldier from Oneida who died during World War II.

Biography

Born March 26, 1924, William “Sid” Stanfill was the son of Oda Milford Stanfill (1892-1966) and Minnie Lee King (1892-1973).

His siblings included Bertie Watson (1914-1984), Millard Filmore Stanfill (1916-1988), Jesse Willard Stanfill (1916-1968), Chester Arthur Stanfill (1921-2014), Julia Maye Marcum (1929-2003), and James Milford Stanfill (1934-1990).

Sid married Elizabeth “Libby” Jones (1921-2011), the daughter of George Henry Jones (1900-1964) and Laura Beatrice Asbell (1895-1945) from Georgia. They had one daughter, Janice Maxine Howard (1943-2010).

He joined Bethlehem Baptist Church on May 15, 1938.

World War II

T/4 Stanfill enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 4th Reconnaissance Squadron. He died of a gunshot wound at Fort Dix, N.J. on July 14, 1943. He had just returned to base from being home in Oneida on furlough when the incident occurred.

His body was accompanied back to Scott County with an escort by Sgt. Quentin King from Scott County. A funeral service was held at New Haven Baptist Church, and he was buried at Cooper Memorial Gardens.

He is listed on the VFW Post 5669 Memorial Wall in Oneida, the Scott County Veterans Memorial in Huntsville, and the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial in Knoxville.

Libby did not remarry. She lived her life in Augusta, Ga., and died on May 25, 2011. Janice married William C. Howard (1941-2016) and also spent her life in Augusta, where she was co-owner of Howard’s Appliance in the downtown area. She died in 2010.
