Sacred Ground: New Light Cemetery
In the New Light neighborhood west of Winfield, across the street from the New Light Baptist Church, is New Light Cemetery. Consisting of nearly 400 graves and dating back to the middle of the 19th century, this cemetery has the distinction of being both one of the oldest and one of the largest cemeteries in the Winfield area.
It doesn’t stand along as either of those things; the largest cemetery in the Winfield area is the Chitwood Cemetery near Pine Grove, containing more than 600 graves. And the oldest known cemetery is the Davis Cemetery on Alderville Road, which dates to the 1810s.
But New Light Cemetery certainly has its place among Winfield cemeteries. A walk through the cemetery reveals that the earliest families buried here were the Chitwoods and the Creekmores. In fact, it wasn’t until the early 20th century that New Light became more of a community cemetery than a family cemetery.
There is no family more synonymous with Winfield than the Chitwood family, of course. Revolutionary War veteran James Chitwood was the first permanent settler of Winfield and has many descendants still living in the area today. One of his sons, Richard Chitwood, is buried at New Light. And that’s where the story of this cemetery begins.
The Chitwood family
Richard Chitwood (1813-1891) is the oldest member of the Chitwood clan buried at New Light. His parents were James Chitwood and Martha White, both of whom are buried at the aforementioned Chitwood Cemetery.
Born in Powhatan County, Va., James Chitwood fought with the Patriots during the Revolutionary War and moved to present-day Scott County after the war had ended. The Chitwood family was one of the best examples of split loyalties during the war. Some of them, like Pvt. James Chitwood, sided with the colonists. Others, like his father and uncle, remained loyal to the British crown.
In fact, the story of Chitwood’s uncle, Capt. James Chitwood, is well documented. He, along with two of his sons, were among the Tories who were captured by Patriot militia at the Battle of Kings Mountain in South Carolina. Thirty-nine of them were sentenced to be hanged at a makeshift and illegal trial in nearby North Carolina after the battle. Capt. James Chitwood was one of the first to be hanged, and a total of nine men were hanged before civilians intervened and persuaded militia officers to stop the murders. Today, a plaque by the roadside denotes the “Biggerstaff Hanging Tree,” named for a Torie who had been killed in the war — and at whose farm the hangings took place.
Two of Capt. Chitwood’s sons had also been sentenced to hang but were granted 99-year reprieves.
Following the war, Pvt. James Chitwood moved to what we now know as Winfield. One of his cousins who had been sentenced to hang in North Carolina, Shadrach Chitwood, made the move with him and lived in the Winfield area for a short time, though he would later move to Missouri.
James and Martha Chitwood had at least six children, and Richard Chitwood was the youngest of those.
The first person buried at New Light was a newborn baby named Richard Chitwood. He was born in 1862 and died a few weeks later. Today, his stone has largely become illegible; in fact, the date of death can no longer be made out. It isn’t clear who his parents were. Old Richard Chitwood would have been nearly 50 at the time, and the youngest of his known children had been born 17 years earlier, making him an unlikely candidate to be baby Chitwood’s father. A more likely possibility might be Richard’s son, David Chitwood, who would have been 26 at the time. He had eight known children, the oldest of whom — Andrew Jackson Chitwood — was born in 1863.
In any event, Richard Chitwood married Elizabeth “Betsy” Kitchen in 1830. They were married in Franklin County, Va., and it appears they did not return to Tennessee until sometime between 1850 and 1860. They had five known children: Jane, David, Allen, Sarah and Helen. Sarah is buried at Chitwood Cemetery. It isn’t clear where most of the rest are buried.
David Chitwood married Nancy Campbell. As already mentioned, they had at least eight children: Andrew Jackson, Mary Helen, Lucinda, Jimmie, Elizabeth, Francis Marion, David Howard and George Flem.
Richard Chitwood was buried at New Light when he died in 1891. His wife, Betsy, had been buried there seven years earlier.
David Chitwood was buried at New Light in 1883. His wife, Nancy, was buried there in 1919. Some of their children were also buried at New Light: Jimmie, who died in 1913, Francis Marion, who died in 1938, and George Flem, who died in 1966. David Howard was buried at Chitwood Cemetery. Lucinda married a Chitwood cousin, Jarrett Robert Chitwood — a great-grandson of James Chitwood; grandson of Pleasant Chitwood, who Pleasant Grove was named after — and is buried at Trammell Cemetery on Jellico Creek.
Francis Marion, or “F.M.,” although he went by Marion, married Mary “Mollie” Stanley from Pine Hill (she is buried at Pine Hill Cemetery). They had twins buried at New Light. One of them died at birth just days before Christmas in 1925. The other died in October 1927. Both of their stones are inscribed simply as “Infant,” identifying them as the children of “F&M Chitwood.”
Jimmie married Jenettie “Nettie” Roberts, who was also buried at New Light. They had a son, Arthur Chitwood, who died of tuberculosis in 1940 and is buried at the cemetery. It should be noted that Arthur’s obituary, published upon his death, identifies New Light as “the family cemetery.”
George Flem and his wife, Mary Elizabeth, had a son, Dillard, who was buried at the cemetery in 1979.
Among a separate group of Chitwoods — though still related — is Houston Chitwood, who was buried at New Light in 1969. He was a grandson of Pleasant Chitwood Jr.; a great-nephew to Jarrett “J.C.” Chitwood. He married Azalee Strunk, who was buried at the cemetery in 1968.
The Creekmore family
If New Light Cemetery was once considered the Chitwood family cemetery, it could have also been considered the Creekmore family cemetery.
The Creekmores were an early family who lived in the New Light area, though they had faded from the scene in that area by the early 20th century.
First to be buried at New Light was George W. Creekmore in 1871. He was the second person buried at the cemetery, with baby Richard Chitwood being the first.
George Creekmore was the 17-year-old son of Thomas Ballentine Creekmore, the patriarch of the New Light Creekmores.
The Creekmore family was originally from the Williamsburg area of southeastern Kentucky, which is where George Creekmore’s grandfather, Ballentine Batchelor Creekmore, is buried. Most of the family remained in Whitley County — but not all of them. Thomas Ballentine had a sister, Mary Lemon, who married William Cordell in Scott County. And Thomas moved to Scott County for good.
Thomas Creekmore married Mary Trammell, a granddaughter of Capt. Dennis Trammell, the Revolutionary War veteran who is buried at Trammell Cemetery in Winfield. Her parents, David Trammell and Lucinda Holt, are buried at the Trammell Cemetery on Jellico Creek.
Thomas and Mary had six children. The oldest, Green Berry, served as postmaster at Jellico and was elected to the Tennessee legislature. He later moved to New Mexico. He married into the Chitwood family; his first wife, Elizabeth Chitwood, was a great-granddaughter of Pvt. James Chitwood. Following her death, he married Elizabeth Blankenship, who was a second-great-granddaughter of Capt. Dennis Trammell. Her father, Ewell Blankenship, is buried at the Angel-Wright Cemetery near Gum Fork.
The second of the Creekmore children, born two years after Green Berry, was George Creekmore. It isn’t clear why he died at such a young age. However, just two days later, his mother, Mary Trammell Creekmore, died and was buried at New Light. She was 41.
Following Mary’s death, Thomas Creekmore remarried to Nancy Dupuy. They had one child, Leuonia. Nancy died just days after Leuonia’s birth and was buried at New Light. (Her mother, Temperance “Tempy” Stephens Dupuy, was buried at New Light in 1883.)
Thomas later remarried again, to Emley Ross. She was buried at New Light in 1902. Thomas died in 1911 and was buried at the cemetery.
There were two Creekmore children buried at the cemetery, as well: one-year-old Bertha in 1887, and newborn Ora in 1891. It seems likely that they were sisters, perhaps the grandchildren of Thomas Creekmore.
The Taylor family
One family that has featured prominently at New Light through the years is the Taylor family, beginning with Reubin Taylor (1851-1920) and his wife, Elizabeth Cooper (1854-1916). In fact, there is no family more prominent at New Light Cemetery than the Taylors.
Reubin Taylor was the son of Dempsey Taylor and Ann Meadors of Winfield. His family lived in the Alderville area. Elizabeth Cooper was from McCreary County.
Reubin and Elizabeth had at least seven children, and several of them were buried at New Light: Julia Ann Stanfill in 1933, along with her husband, Joe Stanfill, in 1934; John Dempsey Taylor in 1949, and his wife, Arissa Mae Owens, in 1947; and Roxie Dane in 1918. Roxie may have died from complications of childbirth; her death certificate is difficult to make out. She had a daughter, Edna Dane, who was buried at the cemetery just a few weeks earlier in 1918.
Another of the Taylor children, Rhoda Taylor, was buried at New Light and her gravei s marked only with a funeral home marker from Scott County Funeral Home. There are no dates. It is reported on the FindAGrave website that she died in 1889. However, that is the year she was born. She was still living in 1900 when the census was taken. It is not clear when she died.
Sidney Taylor was buried at New Light in 1911, at age 31. His wife, Nanie Sweeney King, was buried there in 1924. He was another of Reubin and Elizabeth’s children, born William Sidney Taylor in 1879.
Two other Taylor children were born after Rhoda: Roxie Mae, mentioned above, and Eva Lana. Eva married Hawkin Sexton, and both she and her husband were buried at New Light.
Three-month-old Pollie Taylor was buried at New Light in 1920. While she was likely a granddaughter of Reubin and Elizabeth, it’s not clear who her parents were. Also in 1920, one-year-old Maudie Taylor died. She was the daughter of John Dempsey and his wife, Arissa.
Nellie Taylor was buried at New Light when she died in 1932 at age 24. She was the daughter of Rev. George Milton Taylor and Luevicie Carson, both of whom would be buried at New Light later. She had a sister, Nola Belle Taylor, who was later buried at the cemetery, along with his wife, James Carl Jacks. James and Nola had a daughter, Dora June Jacks Carter, who was buried at the cemetery in 2018.
In 1941, baby Connie Jean Taylor was born at the cemetery. She was a granddaughter of John Dempsey Taylor, the daughter of Hilery Taylor and Ruby Chambers. Her brother, Vernon Taylor, was later buried at the cemetery, along with his wife, Hazel Marie Morrow. Another sibling, Wilda Mae, was buried at the cemetery, along with her husband, James Ipock. So, too, was another sibling, Caney Roscoe Taylor.
Ernest Taylor, baby Connie’s uncle and one of the sons of John Dempsey, was buried at New Light in 1942. His wife, Mae Birch, was later buried there in 1986. Their daughter, Pearl Mae, and her husband, Gib Strunk, were later buried at the cemetery, as well.
Taylor descendants are still being buried at New Light today. Raleigh Lewis Taylor was buried there in 2019. His brother, James Edward Taylor, was buried there in 2016. Their parents and several other siblings were buried at Hazel Valley Memorial Cemetery in Oneida.
The cemetery grows
The first person other than a member of the Chitwood or Creekmore families to be buried at New Light Cemetery was Mamia Jones in 1896. She was the infant daughter of Rufus Jones and Lucinda Ryan, though her parents were not buried at the cemetery. They moved to southern Tennessee after her death. Her father is buried in Spring City and her mother is buried in North Carolina.
In 1899, James Jarboe was buried at the cemetery. And two years later, his wife, Rosa Duncan, was buried there. They had a daughter, Erma Jarbo Faulkner, who was buried at the cemetery. Her husband, Lewis Cordell, was buried at the cemetery in 1926.
The Griffith family
In 1905, Daniel Corbin Griffith was buried at New Light. He and his wife, Rosetta Pemberton, were originally from Robbins. Rosetta was buried at New Light when she died less than one year after her husband.
One of their daughters, Rebecca Nevada, married Martin Jacks, the son of Hayden Jacks and Mary Webb. They’re both buried at New Light, as well. Another daughter, Sarah Jane, was buried at the cemetery in 1908.
Daniel Corbin Griffith was the brother of Fielding Griffith, Scott County’s first casualty of the Civil War, and a great-grandson of Revolutionary War veteran Joseph Griffith, the first man to settle on Brimstone Creek in the Robbins area. Joseph Griffith was a personal bodyguard to Gen. George Washington and was present when British Lord Gen. Cornwallis surrendered his sword to Washington after the Siege of Yorktown to end the war.
Daniel Griffith had a brother, Mitchel Griffith, who was buried at New Light in 1926. Mitchel’s wife, Eliza, was buried at the cemetery in 1934.
The Stephens Family
The name that you find at New Light Cemetery more than any other is Stephens, dating back to Florence Stephens in 1906.
Florence Taylor Stephens was just 25 when she died in July 1906. She was the wife of Manuel Carter Stephens, and they had one child: Elizabeth Ann “Lizzie” Stephens. Both were later buried at New Light, her husband in 1962 and her daughter in 1982. So, too, was Lizzie’s husband, Rob Stephens, in 1995.
Manuel Stephens was the son of Jessie Stephens and Sallie West. The Stephens family was originally from the Pine Knot area of McCreary County, but Manuel moved to the New Light area after marrying into the Taylor family.
Following Florence’s death, Manuel remarried to Marget Hamby, the daughter of Rev. William Riley Hamby and Sarah “Sally” Lay of the Foster Crossroads area. Her first husband, Sherman Lee Ross, had died in 1902.
Marget also died young. She was only 39 when she died in 1917. Manuel married a third time to Margaret “Maggie” Perkins, who is married at New Light.
In total, Manuel had six children: sons Everett, Ezra and Eddie, and daughters Lizzie, Verna and Mary Etta. Everett was buried at New Light, as was Ezra and his wife, Roxie Taylor.
A baby, Freddie Stephens, was buried at the cemetery in October 1917. Another baby, Clarence Stephens, was buried there in 1918. And a one-year-old child, Earl Stephens, was buried there in 1927. Freddie and Clarence were the children of Rob and Lizzie Stephens. Yet two more Stephens babies, Forest and Doris, were buried at the cemetery in March 1935, apparently twins. They, too, were the children of Rob and Lizzie. Earl Stephens has the same style of flat stone as the other Stephens children, but all the others denote that their parents were Rob and Lizzie Stephens; his does not.
Another Stephens baby, Pauline Mae, was buried at the cemetery in 1930. She was the daughter of Earl Stephens and Elizabeth Stringfield, who were later buried at the cemetery. Earl was the son of Jessie Stephens and Luvernia Dolen, who would later be buried at the cemetery. Following the death of Elizabeth in 1939, Earl remarried to Flaria King. She is buried at New Light, as well. This particular family was another branch of the same Stephens family from McCreary County. Calvin Stephens, grandfather of Manuel Carter Stephens, was also the grandfather of Jessie Stephens.
Another Stephens baby, Bobby Joe Stephens, was buried at the cemetery in 1935. He was the son of Edgar “Edd” Stephens and Estelle Strunk, a grandchild of Manuel Carter Stephens.
Three more Stephens babies were buried at the cemetery between 1945 and 1952 — Herbert, Forest and Hurstle Jennings Stephens. These were the children of Hurstle Stephens and Della Mae Burchfield, grandchildren of Jessie Stephens and Luvernia Dolen. Their uncle was Earl Stephens.
The most recent member of the family buried at the cemetery was Sara Stephens in 2022. She was a granddaughter of Earl Stephens and Elizabeth Stringfield. Her husband, Fred Stephens, was buried at the cemetery in 2017.
The Strunk Family
Another family prominent at New Light Cemetery is the Strunk family. beginning with a Strunk baby in 1913. He shares a stone with one-year-old Fred Burton Strunk, who died in 1919. Another infant Strunk died in 1918.
The second infant Strunk, who died in 1918, was the daughter of Edward Howard Strunk and Mattie Walker. It’s not clear that the other babies were her siblings.
Another Strunk baby, Charity Ann Strunk, died in 1927 and was buried at New Light. She was the daughter of Jasper Strunk and Flara Stanfill, who would later be buried at the cemetery. Charity’s sister, Estelle Strunk, was the wife of Edgar “Edd” Stephens and later married Kirby Edward King. She was the oldest member of the New Light church when she died in 2012 at age 97.
In addition to baby Bobby Joe, Estelle has two other children buried at New Light: Leland Stephens, and Harold “Klondike” Stephens.
In addition to her baby siblings, Estelle had other siblings buried at New Light: Ella Pearl Strunk and her husband, John Perkins (and their children Gertie Lee Perkins Brown, Dillard Perkins and Willard Clay Perkins); Hobert Strunk and his wife, Ruth Abston (and their son, Leland “Pete” Strunk); and Hurstle Strunk and his wife, Dessie Faye Ryan.
The cemetery today
The most recent burial at New Light Cemetery was George Washington Strunk IV, who died in February. He was the 42-year-old son of George W. Strunk III and Mary King.
Prior to that, Jack Barnett was buried at New Light in December 2023. His parents, Ben Barnett and Frances Sexton, were previously buried at the cemetery, as was a sibling, Erlene Kaye Barnett.
