Mearle Massey

Mearle Massey (Dec. 14, 1922 – July 15, 1944) was a soldier from Norma killed in Burma during World War II.

Biography

Born Dec. 14, 1922, Mearle Massey was the son of Isaac Elin Massey (1893-1971) and Emily Bowling (1900-1970). His siblings included Orville L. Massey (1917-2006), Harold Massey (born about 1920), Howard Massey (1925-1973), Anna Mae Massey (1928-1934), Chester Massey (1931-1968) and Lee Ray Massey (born about 1940).

Mearle was born at Norma. When the 1930 census was taken, the family lived in Campbell County. When the 1940 census was taken, the family had moved to Harlan, Ky.

World War II

Pvt. Massey enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 27, 1941 at Roanoke, Va. He was assigned to the 475th Infantry Regiment, 5307th Composite Unit, I&R Platoon, 2nd Battalion. He was killed on July 15, 1944 near Myanmar, Burma.

Aftermath

Pvt. Massey’s body was returned to Tennessee in 1948, arriving at a relative’s home in Elgin. A newspaper account at the time stated that he was to be buried at Fairview Cemetery. However, a headstone cannot be found for him there.

He is not listed on either of the veterans memorials in Scott County.
