Jesse Boyatt

Jesse Boyatt (Nov. 11, 1914 – Sept. 14, 1952) was a U.S. Air Force veteran from Foster Crossroads during World War II.

Biography

Born Nov. 11, 1914, Jesse Boyatt was the son of Alvis Boyatt (1874-1955) and Luvernia Slaven (1879-1960). His siblings included Claude Boyatt (1898-1923), Lawrence Boyatt (1900-1983), Julia Ross (1902-1942), Ettie Boyatt (1904-1916), Grace Hamby (1907-1968), Thelma Blevins (1909-1998), Theodore Boyatt (1912-2001), Keith Boyatt (1917-1984) and Hope Novak (1920-1977).

Boyatt married Edna Burchfield in Alexandria, Va. on Jan. 20, 1943. She was the daughter of Andrew Slaven and Bess Alcorn of Oneida. They had a daughter, Barbara Jean Boyatt Raborn.

World War II

Although he is listed on the Scott County Veterans Memorial in Huntsville, Sgt. Boyatt did not die in World War II. He died on Sept. 14, 1952.

Sgt. Boyatt apparently did serve during World War II. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was assigned to the 3585 Maintenance & Supply Squadron. It isn’t clear when he enlisted, but in 1940 he was stationed at Cape Elizabeth in Maine. He may have enlisted on Nov. 13, 1939, a date that is listed on an application for a military headstone after his death. A new date of Jan. 28, 1950 is also handwritten on the application. He obtained the rank of technical sergeant.

Sgt. Boyatt registered for the draft in Oneida on Sept. 28, 1945.

Death

Sgt. Boyatt was killed in a car accident in Oneida on Sept. 14, 1952, while home on furlough.

He was buried at Foster Crossroads Cemetery. His wife, Edna, never remarried. She died in 1974.
