Homer Marcum

Homer S. Marcum (Sept. 13, 1915 – July 8, 1944) was a soldier from Pioneer who was killed on Saipan Island during World War II.

Biography

Born Sept. 13, 1915, Homer S. Marcum was the son of Lora M. Marcum (1886-1946) and Ida Mae Reed (1892-1973). His siblings included Clifford Marcum (1911-1988), Bertha Adkins (1913-1995), Thelma Stanley (1918-2008), Ruth Owens (1924-2009), Ralph M. Marcum (1927-1968), Grace Baird (1930-2020) Nadine Meredith (1933-1988), and Edna Ford.

World War II

Staff Sgt. Marcum enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1936 and was assigned to Co. E, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. He sailed for Hawaii in July 1939. He was stationed at Wahiawa in Honolulu when the 1940 census was taken. He was killed at Saipan Island on July 8, 1944.

Aftermath

SSgt. Marcum’s body was returned to Scott County for burial at Fairview Cemetery, where his parents are also buried.

He received the Purple Heart award. He is listed on the Scott County Veterans Memorial in Huntsville, and the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial in Knoxville.
