George Russ

George Daniel Russ (Dec. 3, 1931 – Feb. 13, 1951) was a soldier from New River killed in the Korean War.

Biography

Born Dec. 3, 1931, George D. Russ was the son of George Theim Russ (1904-1965) and Ida Naomi Tickle (1914-1957). His siblings included Naomi Katherine Davidson (1930-1998), Robert Franklin Russ (1933-2007), Virginia Ruth Goad (1936-2013), Andrew Adam Russ (1941-1990), Bill E. Russ (1925-2008), Susie Thomas and Charles Russ.

The Russ family was originally from Virginia. However, they later moved to Scott County and lived at New River. George T. Russ moved to Scott County to take a job with the railroad. He worked as an engineer. The move to Scott County occurred after 1940.

Korean War

Pvt. Russ enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded in South Korea on Sept. 7, 1950, but returned to duty on Sept. 15, 1950. He was wounded again on Nov. 26, 1950, and returned to duty on Dec. 13, 1950. He was killed in action on Feb. 13, 1951 in the Hoengsong region.

Aftermath

Pvt. Russ’s body was returned to the U.S., and he was buried at Temple Hill Memorial Park in Virginia, where his parents are also buried. He is listed on the VFW Post 5669 Memorial Wall in Oneida and the Scott County Veterans Memorial in Huntsville.
