Eddie Culver

Edgar C. “Eddie” Culver (1929-2008) was a military veteran and an educator who served as Scott County Superintendent of Schools in the 1980s.

Biography

Culver was born May 12, 1929 in Atlanta, Ga., the son of Edgar Stern Culver (1900-1972) and Lelia Othola Stanley (1904-1961). Both of his parents were originally from Scott County. He was one of four children, and the only boy of the family.

Culver joined the U.S. Navy in 1946 and served until 1948, obtaining the rank of staff sergeant. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1949 and served until 1952.

Family

Culver married JoAnn Robbins, and they had three children: sons Richard and Steve, and daughter Kim.

Culver’s mother-in-law, Ora Shoemaker Robbins, was also superintendent of schools in Scott County, serving in the 1950s as the only woman ever elected to the position.

Professional Life

Culver began a career in education after his time in the U.S. armed forces. He taught for more than 30 years.

He was also a member of Mountain View Missionary Baptist Church for more than 50 years, and served as a deacon at the church.

Scott County School Superintendent

Culver was elected Scott County School Superintendent in 1980, replacing Bailey Cross. He was re-elected in 1984. He was succeeded in 1988 by Amon Lay.

Death

Culver died on Oct. 14, 2008 at his home in the Mountain View community near Robbins. He was 79. A funeral service was held at Mountain View Missionary Baptist Church on Oct. 18, 2008. He was buried at Black Creek Crossroads Cemetery.
