John L. Shepherd, Jr., 75, of Knoxville, passed away September 13, 2013, at his home.
Born March 30, 1938, he was preceded in death by his parents, John Sr. and Johnnie Shepherd.
He was a Baptist pastor serving Trenton Street Baptist Church in Harriman, Indian Springs Baptist Church in Kingsport, Bethlehem Baptist Church in Oneida, and Chilhowee Hills Baptist Church in Knoxville. In 1998, he founded and became president of Calvary Road Ministries to the Maasai in Kenya until the present. He was raised in Middlesboro, Ky., graduated from Tennessee Tech in 1960, and was called to preach in 1963. He then became pastor of Cane Creek and Baxter First Baptist churches before going to New Orleans Seminary where he graduated in 1968.
He is survived by wife, Elise Gentry Shepherd of Knoxville; daughter, Tamie Campbell and husband, Greg; sons: John Shepherd and wife, Joy, and Mark Shepherd and wife, Jennifer; grandchildren: Christopher, Ashley, Aaron, Seth, Joshua, Alexandria, and Thomas; great-grandchildren: Brenden, Riley, and Ainslee; brother, Reginald ìSonnyî Shepherd and wife, Betty; sister-in-law, Willodene Gentry Peek and husband, Rev. Bob Peek; and sister-in-law, Jo Ann Harrod of Cookeville; and many other relatives.
The family will receive friends from 3 - 6 p.m., Friday, September 20, at Chilhowee Hills Baptist Church, 4615 Asheville Highway, Knoxville. Celebration of life will follow at 6 p.m., with Dr. John L, Shepherd, III, Mark Shepherd, Dr. David Rankin, and Blaine Anderson officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Road Ministries, 5216 Fountain Gate Road, Knoxville, TN 37918.
