Should a spending freeze by Scott County include a halt on new car purchases for the Scott County Sheriff's Department? Our readers sound off:

They need safe vehicles. Those are fleet vehicles, not luxury cars. Smaller cars don’t hold up to duty. They have to be able to respond to a call. If they get called and don’t show up due to a maintenance issue, they will probably get sued by the very ones saying they don’t need the cars.

I am mixed on this. If it is drug money then that is supposed to be set aside for the cars and equipment. But if not it can wait for a bit.

The money used to buy the cars, from what I understand, is drug money that has been seized. If that is the case let them spend it on cars, trucks or firearms to get these scum bags off the street.

I think the sheriff’s department, as with EMS and fire departments, need the best the county can provide. Period.

I believe they can use the nice cars that they get from drug busts.

They should wait. We have more than enough patrol cars now. So what if a couple are dented and rusted. My truck is a hunk of junk but it still works and still does the job just fine. And the county has a few really nice cars. It seems to me that instead of buying cars that are luxury cars the county needs to buy simple patrol cars. They could have bought two cars for the price of what they probably paid for one of those Chargers. Patrol cars is the least of this county’s problems.

They should wait on more cars and spend money on getting more jobs in here first.

Who in this county is willing to have their family at risk because the patrol car broke down while en route to answer the call that you made? I certainly hope if I ever need the police they can get to me and my family as soon as possible.

Our county is in such bad shape. I don’t think the commissioners have ever made right decisions for our county and use money for stupid stuff we cannot even drive on our roads. If they would fix them the cars would last longer, too.

Cars need to wait! It’s not like we have a lot of high speed car chases that a Charger is required to get the job done.

They have enough to last for a while.
