HUNTSVILLE — Chris Smith scored a goal in the second overtime here Thursday to help Scott end a stalemate with Rockwood, as the Highlanders earned a 3-2 win in the waning stages of the regular season.

Regulation ended in a 2-2 deadlock, and neither team was able to score in the first overtime. But Smith’s goal, which came two minutes into the second overtime off an assist by Michael Nguyen, proved to be the difference.

Nguyen got the scoring started with 18 minutes remaining in the first half, scoring off an assist by Prestin Bee.

The Highlanders added to the scoreboard just before the end of the first half, with Ryan Jeffers scoring off an assist by Smith.

After a somewhat difficult start to the season, Scott has rebounded to win four of its last six games.

The Highlanders were to have finished out the regular season this week, with a visit from Austin-East on Monday and a trip to Fulton on Tuesday.

The district tournament is scheduled to begin next week.
