Kenneth Martin, 75, of Helenwood, passed away February 22, 2013, surrounded by his family.
Born in St. Charles, Virginia, March 31, 1937, he was preceded in death by his parents, George Rex and Mertie Cotton Martin; baby sister, Judith; and grandparents: Wayne and Melda Keeton Cotton, Newton Mitchell, and Nellie Denton Martin.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and served his country in Germany. He was a coal miner by profession and worked as a Federal Coal Mine Inspector and a Mine Safety and Health Specialist with MSHA for 25 years. He was a devoted husband and father, and worked hard everyday of his life and was always willing to help family, friends, or anyone with a need. He enjoyed repair and maintenance of used or broken lawn equipment, household appliances, and most anything someone else had discarded. He took great pride in his garden and, later in life, his yard, and Cotton Cemetery, where he was a caretaker. He was a member of First Baptist Church-Oneida.
He is survived by his wife, Janise Adkins Martin of Helenwood; children: David Martin and wife, Sandy of Oneida, Dan Martin and wife, Linda, of Macclesfield, NC, Dale Martin and wife, Tammy, of Kingsport, and Cynthia Becker and husband, Timothy, of Dothan, Ala; 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, brothers: Paul Martin and wife, Linda, of Jamestown, and Allen Martin and wife, Jenny, of Oneida; sisters: Helen Carter and husband, Hascue, of Harriman, and Geraldine Smith and husband, James, of Oneida; several nieces and nephews, and many other relatives.
Funeral service was conducted February 25, at First Baptist Church-Oneida with Dr. Doug White and Bro. Roger Cecil officiating. Graveside service was conducted February 26, at Cotton Cemetery.
Jones & Son Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
