Steven Thompson

Steven D. Thompson (July 2, 1950 – December 9, 2025) was a long-time Assessor of Property in Scott County, and the son of long-time Scott County Trustee C.J. Thompson.

Biography

Born July 2, 1950, Steve Thompson was the son of Clifford Josh Thompson (1923-2003) and Doris Laxton (1925-2008). He was a grandson of Scott County Sheriff Esau Laxton, and a nephew of Scott County Sheriff Jack Laxton.

Steve’s siblings included Cookie Allen, Tammy Wright, Jack E. Lay and Roger Thompson.

Thompson married Debbie Thompson in 1972. They had two sons: Jeremy Thompson and wife Kari, and Josh Thompson and wife Jodi. At the time of his death, he had four grandchildren.

Professional Life

Thompson worked for West Coal Corporation for 25 years. The company was co-owned by his brother, Jack E. Lay, the long-time mayor of Oneida. Later, he followed his father into politics by winning election to the office of Scott County Assessor of Property. He won re-election several times before retiring in 2016. He was replaced by Tony Sexton.

Thompson was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Oneida.

Illness and death

In 1980, Thompson underwent a life-saving bone marrow transplant.

In 2025, Thompson underwent a second bone marrow transplant for acute myeloid (AML) leukemia. However, it was not successful.

Thompson died on December 9, 2025, at age 75. A funeral service was held on December 13, 2025 at Four Oaks Funeral Home in Oneida with Dilbert Terry and Sean Allen Lee officiating. He was buried at Cooper Memorial Gardens in the Coopertown community of Oneida, where his parents are also buried.
