Solomon Privett

Solomon Privett (about 1840 – Aug. 7, 1862) was a Union soldier from Scott County who died during the Civil War.

Biography

Born about 1840, Solomon Privett was the son of James Privett (1804-1872) and Mary Elizabeth Murphy (1805-1893). His siblings included Andrew Jackson Privett (1835-1911), James Irvin Privett (1836-1908), Jonathan Privett (1839-1921), Hiram Privett (1841-1910), Sarah Elizabeth Duncan (1845-1923) and Archibald Privett (1848-1913).

Civil War

Solomon Privett enlisted in the Union army on Oct. 25, 1861 and was assigned to Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry. He died of unknown, non-combat causes at Cumberland Gap, Tenn. on Aug. 7, 1862.

Solomon’s father, James Privett, also served in Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry as a corporal. It appears his brother, Andrew, did, as well. (Paul Roy’s Scott County in the Civil War lists him as Andrew Privett Jr. but it appears to be the same Andrew Privett.) Both James and Andrew were sick and left at the Cumberland Gap on Sept. 17, 1862, where they were captured by Confederate forces. Both were paroled by the rebels on Oct. 2, 1862.

Salem Privett, who also died during the war, was reported by H. Clay Smith in Dusty Bits of the Forgotten Past to be from Scott County, but there’s no indication that he was related to Solomon Privett, or even from Scott County.
