Scott County’s Civil War soldiers

Scott County enlisted hundreds of men in the Civil War, mostly for the Union but also some for the Confederacy. Some of the earliest Civil War veterans traveled north to Kentucky to enlist in the Union army. But Scott County also had a Home Guard, and many of them enlisted in a short-lived local Union regiment, the 7th Tennessee under Col. William T. Clift of Chattanooga. Later, a sizable number of Scott Countians enlisted in the Union army as Gen. Ambrose Burnside marched his Army of the Ohio through Scott County en route to seize Knoxville from the Confederacy. Every soldier listed as a member of the East Tennessee National Guard enlisted in that regiment — which was created by Burnside — while Burnside was encamped at Chitwood (Winfield) in September 1863. Most of them were mustered out of the service at Clinton, Tenn. on Dec. 14, 1863.

Following is a list of Scott County’s Civil War soldiers. This should not be considered an exhaustive list, but it’s close. It’s compiled mostly from the research of Paul Roy. For more information on most of these soldiers, see Roy’s Scott County in the Civil War, which is available for purchase from the Scott County Historical Society in Huntsville, Tenn.

Roy’s information came from the 1890 U.S. Veterans Census, as well as regimental rosters, histories written by H. Clay Smith (Dusty Bits of the Forgotten Past) and others, and private contributions. In some cases, the veterans were not originally from Scott County but moved to Scott County after the war and were living here in 1890 (case in point: John Fetterman, who served in the Union army from Minnesota and liked Scott County so much when he marched through in September 1863 that he returned years after the war and settled down here).

In some cases below, names were listed in Roy’s book based on regimental rosters but additional research by the Independent Herald has concluded that those men were not actually from Scott County. Their information is included on this page, with notations that they were not local to Scott County.

• James Ellis (Co. B, 2nd Tennessee Infantry), killed in the Battle of Big Springs (Rogersville) on Nov. 6, 1863.

• Capt. Henry Gibson (Co. L, 13th Tennessee Cavalry, CSA), killed in Anderson County, Tenn. on Oct. 8, 1863.

• Fielding Griffith (Co. F, 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry), poisoned at Camp Dick Robinson, Ky.

• Jesse Laxton (Confederacy) was killed on Brimstone Creek in 1864 and is buried on Smith Creek.

• Riley Looper (Co. D, 14th Arkansas Infantry, CSA), killed in St. Louis Missouri in 1864. Brother of Emerson Looper.

• George W. Marcum (Co. D, 3rd Tennessee Infantry) was killed at the Buffalo Creek farm of his uncle, Hiram Marcum, in January 1862. He was not in uniform and was attempting to slip north to Kentucky to rejoin his regiment. He is buried at Cross Cemetery on Smith Creek.

• William Massengale (Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry) died at Somerset, Ky. on June 22, 1863 from wounds suffered in battle.

• Joseph Neal (unknown regiment) was killed at an unknown place and date. His widow was Emeline Ross Neal, who married Thomas B. Creekmore after his death.

• Calvin Newport (Co. C, 7th Tennessee Infantry) was killed at Warm Springs, N.C. in 1863.

• Capt. John Newport (Co. E, 11th Tennessee Cavalry) was killed in battle while on patrol in Jonesville, Va. on Jan. 28, 1864 (the Battle of Wierman’s Mill).

• Timothy Sexton (Co. F, 1st Arkansas Infantry) was killed by Confederate bushwhackers in Newton County, Ark. on Jan. 17, 1864. He is buried at Sexton Cemetery in Newton County. He was killed in front of his wife, Artilissa Holt, who died in childbirth four months later.

• Preston J. Silcox (Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry) died from wounds suffered in battle at Rogersville, Tenn. on Nov. 6, 1863.

• Keelan Slagle (Co. D, 30th Kentucky Infantry) died after April 18, 1865 as the result of a wound sustained in battle in August 1864 near Lexington, Ky.

• William Turner Smith (Co. D, 16th Kentucky Infantry) killed in action at the Battle of Atlanta on Aug. 7, 1864.

• Ambers Strunk (Scott County Home Guard) killed in action at the Battle of Brimstone on April 1, 1862.

• Ransom Vanover (Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry) was murdered by Confederate soldiers on Buffalo Creek in Scott County on Nov. 7, 1862, while home on furlough (though he was in uniform).

• Andrew E. Chitwood (Co. G, 2nd TN Infantry), died of measles at London, Ky. on Dec. 4, 1861.

• Andrew Chitwood (Confederate army), died in Union prison camp in St. Louis, Mo. on Jan. 10, 1864. He was born in Scott County but the family left for Missouri between 1850 and the start of the war.

• Sgt. Daniel M. Chitwood (Co. G, 2nd TN Infantry), died in Confederate captivity at Belle Isle on Feb. 20, 1864 after being captured at the Battle of Rogersville, Tenn. on Nov. 6, 1863. Brother to Sgt. Henry H. Chitwood and James H. Chitwood. Son to Cpl. John H. Chitwood.

• Sgt. Henry Hamby Chitwood (Co. G, 2nd TN Infantry), died in Confederate captivity in Baltimore, Mary. on July 24, 1864, after being captured at the Battle of Rogersville, Tenn. on Nov. 6, 1863. Brother to Sgt. Daniel M. Chitwood and James H. Chitwood. Son to Cpl. John H. Chitwood.

• James H. Chitwood (Co. G, 2nd TN Infantry), died in Confederate captivity at Belle Isle on April 6, 1864 after being captured at the Battle of Rogersville, Tenn. on Nov. 6, 1863. Brother to Sgt. Daniel M. Chitwood and Sgt. Henry H. Chitwood. Son to Cpl. John H. Chitwood.

• Cpl. John H. Chitwood (Co. G, 2nd TN Infantry), died in Confederate captivity at Andersonville, Ga. on April 24, 1864 after being captured at the Battle of Rogersville, Tenn. on Nov. 6, 1863. Father to Sgt. Daniel M. Chitwood, Sgt. Henry H. Chitwood, and Pvt. James H. Chitwood.

• Miley Chitwood (Co. G, 2nd TN Infantry), died of typhoid fever at London, Ky. on Jan. 4, 1862.

• Sgt. Ransom J. Conner (Co. H, 2nd East TN Volunteer Infantry), died in Confederate captivity at Richmond, Va. on Feb. 15, 1864, after being captured at the Battle of Rogersville on Nov. 6, 1863. (It does not appear Ransom Conner was actually from Scott County.)

• Capt. Wayne W. Cotton (Co. G, 7th Tennessee Infantry), died of smallpox at his Scott County home on April 21, 1863, while on a mission to Scott County to round up deserters.

• Cpl. Andrew Jackson Creekmore (Co. E, 12th Kentucky Infantry), died of typhoid fever at Somerset, Ky. on Jan. 2, 1862. Brother to William W. Creekmore.

• William W. Creekmore (Co. E, 12th Kentucky Infantry), died on an unknown date during the war, of an unknown cause and in an unknown location. Brother to Andrew Jackson Creekmore.

• Johnson Goad (Co. H, 9th Tennessee Cavalry), died of inflammation of the kidneys at Knoxville, Tenn. on April 15, 1865.

• Cpl. Hugh B. Holdaway (Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry), died of scurvy on Oct. 15, 1864 while in Confederate captivity at Andersonville, after being captured at the Battle of Rogersville on Nov. 6, 1863.

• William Riley Honeycutt (Co. G, 8th Tennessee Infantry), died of smallpox at Knoxville, Tenn. on April 11, 1864.

• William B. James (Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry), died of unknown causes at Baltimore, Mary. on Sept. 20, 1861. Was not from Scott County.

• Samuel Jones (Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry), died in Confederate captivity at Richmond, Va. on April 1, 1864, after being captured at the Battle of Rogersville on Nov. 6, 1863. Was not from Scott County.

• Levi Laxton (Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry), died of smallpox at Clinton, Tenn. on Jan. 7, 1864.

• Zimmery Lay (Co. G, 7th Kentucky Infantry), died of cholera at Barbourville, Ky. on March 19, 1862.

• Emerson Looper (Co. D, 2nd Tennessee Infantry), died of diarrhea in Confederate captivity at Andersonville, Ga. on May 29, 1864, after being captured at the Battle of Rogersville on Nov. 6, 1863. Brother of Riley Looper.

• Hiram C. Marcum (Co. H, 13th Tennessee Cavalry), died of smallpox at Nashville, Tenn. on Feb. 2, 1864.

• William McCoy (Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry), died of diarrhea in Confederate captivity at Andersonville, Ga. on July 24, 1864, after being captured at the Battle of Rogersville on Nov. 6, 1863. McCoy was not actually from Scott County.

• Allen McDonald (Co G, 7th East Tennessee Infantry), died of camp fever at the home of Andrew and Elizabeth Lawson in Scott County on Nov. 20, 1862. He had been captured by Confederate forces on Sept. 12, 1862 and was confined at Knoxville, Tenn. He escaped or was released, and showed up at the Lawson home so sick “that he was never able to set up but a few minutes at a time until his death.”

• George McDonald (Co. D, 2nd Tennessee Volunteers), died of diarrhea in Confederate captivity at Andersonville, Ga. in 1864, after being captured at the Battle of Rogersville on Nov. 6, 1863. Was not from Scott County.

• Cpl. James McDonald (Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry), died of diarrhea in Confederate captivity at Belle Isle in Virginia on Dec. 9, 1863, after being captured at the Battle of Rogersville on Nov. 6, 1863.

• Sgt. Samuel McDonald (Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry), died of diarrhea and pneumonia in Confederate captivity at Andersonville, Ga. on June 14, 1864, after being captured at the Battle of Rogersville on Nov. 6, 1863.

• James Murphy Jr. (Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry), died of “breast disease” at Murfreesboro, Tenn. on Feb. 20, 1863. He does not appear to have been from Scott County.

• Hymelas Patten (Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry), died of unknown causes at Cumberland Gap, Tenn. on Aug. 10, 1862. He was not actually from Scott County.

• Gaston Patterson (Co. C, 2nd Tennessee Infantry), died of starvation in Confederate captivity at Belle Isle in Virginia on Feb. 4, 1864, after being captured at the Battle of Rogersville on Nov. 6, 1863. He was not actually from Scott County, although he was the great-grandson of Mikel Low. His mother returned to Scott County shortly after his death.

• Emanuel Phillips (Co. G, 8th Tennessee Volunteers), died of unknown causes at Knoxville, Tenn. on Jan. 1, 1863.

• John R. Phillips (Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry), died of diarrhea while in Confederate captivity at Belle Isle in Virginia on March 14, 1864, after being captured at the Battle of Rogersville on Nov. 6, 1863.

• Timothy Phillips (Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry), died of anasarca while in Confederate captivity at Andersonville, Ga. on Aug. 23, 1864, after being captured at the Battle of Rogersville on Nov. 6, 1863.

• Salem Privett (Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry), died of unknown causes at Butcher Springs, Ky. on July 25, 1862. Does not appear to have been from Scott County.
