Samuel Jones

Samuel Sevier Jones (1832 – April 1, 1864) was a Union soldier who died during the Civil War. Although Paul Roy, in Scott County in the Civil War, lists him among Scott County’s Civil War soldiers, he was from Claiborne County and apparently did not have any ties to Scott County.

Biography

Born in 1832 in Claiborne County, Tenn., Samuel S. Jones was the son of Elijah Jones (1789-1873) and Elizabeth Nance (1811-1841). His siblings included James Elisha Jones (1808-1896), Dorcas Jones (1811-1892), Thomas Jones (born 1820), Andrew Crockett Jones (1825-1848), Robert Beaty Jones (1827-1847), George Washington Jones (born 1829), Emily B. Jones (born 1830), Mary Jane Jones (born 1835), Sarah E. Jones (born 1838), David Cotterell Jones (1839-1864) and Louiza Jones (born 1840).

Samuel married Amanda Jane Lee (1825-1911) in 1852. They had four children: John Jones (1850-1909), William Thomas Jones (1855-1927), Olivia Jane Jones (1860-1940) and Lucinda Jones (1863-1928). Amanda had first been married to Michael Sowder (1824-1851) and had two children with him: Mary Jane Sowder (1846-1915) and Alexander Sowder Jones (1848-1874).

Civil War

Jones enlisted in the Union army on March 7, 1862 and was assigned to Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry. Along with the rest of the 2nd Tennessee — including many Scott Countians — he was captured by Confederate forces at the Battle of Rogersville in Hawkins County, Tenn. on Nov. 6, 1863. He was confined as a prisoner of war at Belle Isle in Richmond, Va. He was admitted to General Hospital at Howards Grove in Richmond, where he died on April 1, 1864 of smallpox.
