Sacred Ground: Reed Cemetery

What started in the late 19th century as a community burial ground above New River has grown into the mid-county area’s largest cemetery with more than 600 burials.

The Reed Cemetery, originally located west of U.S. Highway 27 and east of U.S. 27 since the highway was rerouted in the 1990s, is the New River community’s preeminent burial ground, and it dates back to an era when this community along the new Cincinnati-Southern Railroad was one of the most important places in all of Scott County.

The cemetery dates back at least to 1890, though it’s impossible to date it precisely because there are so many unmarked graves. It remains active today. 

Beginnings

A sign affixed to the concrete block arch at the original entrance to Reed Cemetery, which has been in place since the 1950s, states that the cemetery was founded in 1895. The earliest verifiable grave actually goes back a bit earlier than that.

On Feb. 27, 1890, Sampson Reed died and was buried at Reed Cemetery with a simple, hand-engraved concrete monument marking his grave. His is the earliest grave at the cemetery that can be confirmed. His stone is located in the center of the cemetery among the other earliest burials there.

There may be burials that are older than Reed’s. There are a number of graves surrounding his that are marked with small, uninscribed field stones or with funeral home markers that simply state, “Unmarked Grave.” The identities of those buried in these graves are unknown. 

One person sometimes reported to have been buried at Reed Cemetery prior to Sampson Reed is Delilah Reed Lewallen — Sampson’s sister. She was the first wife of John Lewallen, Scott County’s first sheriff, who married her younger sister and moved to Texas after her death in 1865. However, if she is buried at Reed Cemetery, her grave is not marked.

In any event, Sampson and Delilah were the son and daughter of Isaac Morris and Phariba Hatfield Reed, and this is the Reed family for which Reed Cemetery is named — the same family that was perhaps the most prominent in 19th century New River.

Phariba’s mother, Rachel Smith Hatfield, is also sometimes reported to be buried at Reed Cemetery. She died sometime between 1840 and 1860. However, as is the case with her granddaughter, Delilah Reed Lewallen, if Rachel is buried at Reed Cemetery, it is in an unmarked grave. (Phariba’s father, Revolutionary War veteran Joseph Hatfield, is buried on Brimstone.)

The Reed family

Phariba Hatfield was born in Virginia and Isaac Reed was born in South Carolina. Both families moved to Tennessee at a time when pioneers from the east side of the Appalachians were crossing the mountains and settling the remote Indian lands beyond in the early 19th century. 

Both the Reed and Hatfield families eventually settled in what is now Helenwood. It isn’t clear exactly when Isaac Reed and Phariba Hatfield were married, or whether that marriage took place in Tennessee. Their first child, daughter Pharaba, was born about 1810, when her mother was around 15. Genealogy records sometimes state that she was born in Kentucky. However, she repeatedly told census enumerators that she was born in Tennessee.

In any event, the Reed family would have certainly been in Tennessee by the time their son Campbell County Reed was born in 1820. The area that is now Helenwood was part of Campbell County, Tenn. at the time.

It was Campbell County Reed, the third-born of Isaac and Phariba Reed, who originally settled Hazel Valley outside Oneida, and was the first person buried at Hazel Valley Cemetery.

Isaac and Phariba had an extremely large family — likely consisting of more than 15 children, including Pharaba, Campbell County and Sampson, among many others. 

The Phillips family

One of the earliest families represented at the Reed Cemetery is the Phillips family that lived at New River and married into the Reed family.

Baby Ira D. Phillips was the first Phillips to be buried at Reed Cemetery when he died one day after his first birthday in October 1896. His parents were Maynard Harrison (M.H.) and Martha Phillips. His paternal grandparents were Josiah and Rebecca Reed Phillips. Rebecca Phillips was another of the many children of Isaac and Phariba Reed. 

In 1902, six years after baby Ira died, his aunt, Vira Phillips died at the age of just 29. She was the sister of M.H. Phillips.

And four years later, in 1906, Rebecca Reed Phillips died at age 57 and was buried at the cemetery. Her husband, Josiah, would later be buried there in 1928.

Rebecca wasn’t the only one of the Reed girls who married into the Phillips family. Catherine Reed married James Granville (J.G.) Phillips. Catherine was the daughter of Sampson Reed and his wife, Sarah McDonald — the daughter of Revolutionary War veteran James McDonald, who is buried at Winona Cemetery. (Sarah died in 1863 and her burial location isn’t clear.) Catherine married J.G. Phillips, the son of Thomas and Esther Terry Phillips. J.G. Phillips was a brother to Josiah Phillips. 

In 1907, Nora Phillips, the daughter of J.G. and Catherine Phillips, died at the age of about seven and was buried at the cemetery. (Nora’s age was listed as eight months in the 1900 census.)

In August 1911, nearly one-year-old Ninia Phillips died and was buried at Reed Cemetery. She was a sister to Ira D. Phillips; the daughter of M.H. and Martha Phillips.

The Cecil family

There are several partitions within the Reed Cemetery, with one being the plot of the Cecil family.

The Cecil family was one of the most prominent families in New River, including Beaty Cecil, who served as a Scott County sheriff and judge, as well as stints as a state representative and state senator. He was the father of the so-called “Fighting Cecils of New River,” which included Medal of Honor recipient Col. Joe Cecil.

As was the case with the Phillips family, the Cecil family of New River married into the Reed family. Pharaba Reed, a daughter of Isaac and Phariba Reed, married James Timothy “Tim” Cecil in 1823. They were the grandparents of Beaty Cecil.

Tim Cecil was the first of the Cecil family in Scott County. He was the son of Samuel and Katherine Peavyhouse Cecil.

There is a monument for Tim Cecil within the Reed partition at Reed Cemetery. However, it is only a cenotaph; he was buried at Cecil Cemetery in Huntsville when he died in 1871. 

Beaty Cecil married Polly Buttram, a member of the Buttram family that was prominent at New River in the 19th century.

The first Cecil buried at Reed Cemetery was Beaty and Polly’s grandson, Austie, who was nine months old when he died in 1906. He was the son of John Riley and Mary Lou Foster Cecil. Both John and Mary Cecil are buried at Reed Cemetery, as well.

Other Cecils buried at the cemetery include Sam Cecil and his wife, Kizzie Thomas, and Henry Barton Cecil, a son of Beaty Cecil who was killed in a U.S. Navy blimp crash in New Jersey in 1933. Cecil Field near Jacksonville, Fla. is named in Henry Barton Cecil’s honor.

Col. Joe Cecil is not buried at the cemetery; rather, he is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. However, there is a cenotaph at Reed Cemetery to memorialize him.

Finally, Maj. Thomas J. Cecil, another of Beaty Cecil’s sons, is buried at the cemetery, along with George Beaty Cecil, the son of John Riley Cecil, and his wife, Marguerite Hail Cecil.

The Parson family

Directly behind the Cecil family partition at the Reed Cemetery is a section of the cemetery that is made up entirely of graves of members of the Parson family.

Like so many other families that figure prominently at this cemetery and in this community, the Parson family ties into the Reed family.

Guy William Parson (1897-1942) married Allie Reed (1898-1949). They had at least 11 children. 

Allie Reed Parson was the daughter of Wiley Reed and Savarie Jane Ellis Reed. Interestingly, while the Reeds are all connected, she did not directly descend from Isaac and Phariba Reed. Instead, her grandfather was Allen Reed, who was Isaac Reed’s brother and is buried at Mountain View — across the river a ways, as the crow flies. Her grandmother was Willie Griffith, the daughter of Revolutionary War veteran Joseph Griffith, who is buried at the Goad Cemetery at Brimstone. 

Guy William Parson was the son of John Wesley and Amanda Cecil Parson. His mother’s grandfather, Ezekiel Cecil, was a brother to James Timothy Cecil, the grandfather of Beaty Cecil. 

Guy and Allie Parson, and John Wesley and Amanda Parson, are all buried at Reed Cemetery.

The first Parson buried at Reed Cemetery was two-year-old Violet Parson, who died on April 4, 1936. She may have been a daughter of Christopher Columbus and Gertrude Willoughby Parson. Christopher Parson was a brother to Guy William Parson.

Guy Parson Jr. died in 1936. He was less than a year old. Another child of Guy and Allie Parson, Buddy Parson, is buried at Reed Cemetery, as well. Guy Parson Jr. and Buddy Parson have identical headstones.

Another Parson child, infant Martha Ann, died in July 1938 and was buried at the cemetery. She was the daughter of Christopher and Gertrude Parson.

In 1942, infant G.W. Parson died and was buried at the cemetery. And in 1946, two-year-old Wilda Jean Parson died and was buried at the cemetery. Both were the children of Guy and Allie Parson.

Christopher Parson was buried at the cemetery in 1963 and Gertie Parson was buried there in 1986. The most recent member of the family to be buried there was Jeffrey Parson in 2021. He was a grandson of Guy and Allie Parson.

The Parton family

Mixed among the Parson headstones are stones that could easily be confused with them: Members of the Parton family. 

The Parton family goes back to Murphy and Emily Slaven Parton, who were buried at Reed Cemetery in 1928. Murphy died on Feb. 13 and Emily died on Oct. 10 of the same year.

Two of Murphy and Emily’s children are buried at the cemetery: Fred Parton, who died in 1979 at age 87, and Earnest Parton, who died in 1969 at age 81.

They also have grandchildren buried at the cemetery who died in infancy: Asbury Parton in 1925 and Roy Parton in 1927. Roy was the son of Fred Parton.

The Mullins family

One of the most tragic stories of Reed Cemetery is the Mullins family partition — not the manner in which they died, necessarily, but the state of their graves.

Little is known about the Mullins family, other than what Robert Bailey recorded in his 1994 book, Cemeteries of Scott County, Tennessee. However, they were apparently a Welsh family who lived in Scott County, including Dr. L.M. Mullins.

Initially, the three Mullins graves were enclosed by an elaborate concrete wall, which required steps to cross over. Their graves were covered by crude crypts, with epitaphs hand-engraved in the concrete.

The crypts have since broken and caved in, and the partition is no longer cared for. In fact, it has been used as a place to discard brush from other parts of the cemetery.

The only grave that can be deciphered is Hattie Mullins, the wife of Dr. L.M. Mullins. She died on Aug. 4, 1924, at the age of 32. Her husband is likely buried beside her, and a third grave may be their young son, who died in 1923 at the age of two.

The Keen family

The Keen family was another of New River’s prominent early families. The story starts with A.Y. Keen, who owned a bottling company there.

The bottling company actually began in Oneida. It was located first on Depot Street, then across the tracks where the Hartco flooring plant was later built, then on Main Street. It was sold to Joseph Najar, a Syrian immigrant, who in turn sold it to Keen. It was Keen who moved the bottling company to New River.

Keen also bought New River’s hotel, which had been started by Reuben Hurtt, a one-time sheriff of Scott County.

Keen was the son of James Marion and Virginia Mabry Keen, who are buried at Huntsville Cemetery.

James Keen was originally from the Celina, Tenn. area, and moved to Buffalo in 1875 before later moving to Huntsville. His two-story mercantile in Huntsville was one of Scott County’s largest stores at the time.

The Keens were descended from Maj. Alderson Thompson Keen, who lived in Scott County briefly and persuaded Union Gen. Ambrose Burnside to move his massive army through Scott County en route to defeat Confederate forces in Knoxville in 1863.

One of Maj. A.T. Keen’s daughters was Helen Blanche Keen, who married James Francis Baker. Their youngest son was Congressman Howard Baker Sr.

A.Y. Keen was a successful businessman, but perhaps not as well-known as his brother, Willard Keen. Willard Keen practiced law with James Francis Baker in Huntsville before eventually moving to Chattanooga and starting an insurance firm.

A.Y. Keen died in 1959 and was buried at Reed Cemetery. Prior to that, Walter Keen had been buried at the cemetery in 1954, and an infant Keen had been buried at the cemetery in 1923.

Walter Keen was A.Y. Keen’s second-born son. The infant Keen was likely another of A.Y. Keen’s children.

Later burials at the cemetery included A.Y. Keen’s wife, Willie Hall, who died in 1965; his son, John Hall Keen, who died in 1980; John Keen’s wife Cora McDonald Keen, who died in 1985; and Nancy Slaven Keen in 1985.
