Sacred Ground: Marcum Cemetery (Oneida)
Of the hundreds of cemeteries found throughout Scott County, Marcum Cemetery in Oneida is one of the most unique, for a variety of reasons.
Located on top of the hill behind the Scott Farmers Co-Op, it seems to stretch on and on infinitely across the top of the ridge. Despite being just out of sight of Scott County’s busiest highway, with a constant drone of vehicles, it is peaceful up here. In some places, the graves are sparse and scattered. In others, they are nearly on top of one another.
There are numerous individual partitions within the cemetery, individual burial grounds within the main graveyard. Many of them are surrounded by concrete borders that resemble something like house foundations from long ago. Some are fenced. You get the feeling, rightly or wrongly, that this was merely the ridge top on the edge of town where the townspeople came to bury their dead, without the organization of a church or a family cemetery.
There are fairly elaborate headstones found here. There are broken headstones. There are very simple headstones that were obviously made at home. And there are some graves that are not marked with stones at all. Some of them are marked with rusted funeral home markers, others with field stones that have not been inscribed, and some are marked only by indentations in the earth.
Perhaps the thing that stands out the most — something that can be found in any old cemetery in Scott County or elsewhere, but that is particularly prominent here — is the graves of children. Everywhere you look at Marcum Cemetery are graves of babies or young children.
The Blevins family
Marcum Cemetery dates back to 1888, and the burial of young Richard Blevins. One of the many children buried at Marcum Cemetery, Richard Blevins was only five years old when he died. His grave is located on the right as you enter the cemetery.
Next to Richard Blevins’ grave is another five-year-old Blevins child: R.S. Blevins. They were both born on Feb. 14, 1883, and they died three days apart in 1888: Richard on March 25, and R.S. on March 28.
According to Richard Blevins’ stone, he was the son of W.C. Blevins. That would be Oneida attorney William Charles Blevins, who was married to Charity Smith.
The stones of Richard and R.S. Blevins, both commercial, are quite different. That would seem unusual for brothers who died three days apart. In fact, W.C. and Charity Blevins had an older son, William Charley Blevins Jr., who died at the age of 22 months in 1882. He’s buried at Carson Memorial Cemetery and has a stone that is identical to Richard Blevins’.
The differences in the stones aside, it would seem likely that the two boys were twin brothers.
In any event, W.C. Blevins was a grandson of Jonathan Blevins, an early settler of what is now the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area. His wife, Charity, was a granddaughter of Isaac Smith, a circuit rider who founded the Methodist church in Oneida. Her parents, Richard “Dickie” Smith and Rachel Terry Smith, are both buried at Marcum Cemetery.
W.C. Blevins was an assessor of property in Scott County at the time of his death in 1914. He was killed by a train just south of town. He was buried at Marcum Cemetery, as was his wife nine years later, in 1923.
The Blevins family knew plenty of tragedy. While their second-born son, William Charley, died just before his second birthday in 1882, then five-year-old Richard died in 1888, and W.C. Blevins was hit by a train, his oldest son, Isaac Newton Blevins, lost two children to tragedies later on. One of them, daughter Jane Blevins, was killed in a military plane crash in Indian in 1945. In 1956, Isaac Blevins’ only son, Howard, was killed in a traffic accident in Scott County.
While R.S. Blevins’ stone is quite different from Richard Blevins’ stone, it is very similar to the nearby shared stone of W.H. Blevins and J.T. Blevins. J.T. Blevins died on June 18, 1890, at the age of 17, and W.H. Blevins died on Dec. 3, 1898, at the age of 27.
There is an identical shared stone that lists J.Q. and J.C. Blevins, who died two days apart in 1900. J.Q. Blevins died on Dec. 5, 1900, at the age of 16. J.T. Blevins died on Dec. 7, 1900, at the age of 19.
There is at least one family tree in circulation that lists J.T. Blevins, W.H. Blevins, J.Q. Blevins and J.T. Blevins as all being the sons of W.C. Blevins.
Other early graves
Other earlier burials at Marcum Cemetery included Finley Litton, who died on July 1, 1890, at the age of 33. He was the son of Oliver and Nellie Brown Litton, and the husband of Lydia Smith.
Rachel Terry Smith, the mother of W.C. Blevins’ wife, Charity, died in 1891 and was buried at Marcum Cemetery. Her husband, Dickie Smith, was buried there the following year.
A newborn Owens infant was buried at the cemetery on Sept. 15, 1891. One year later, on Oct. 18, 1892, his mother, Lulie Huskins Owens, was buried at the cemetery. She was the wife of W.B. Owens.
Thirty-seven-year-old Millard Rosser was next to be buried at Marcum Cemetery, on Feb. 3, 1893. He was the husband of Abigail Cecil, and was a deputy sheriff who was gunned down after arresting a man in Wayne County, Ky. He had arrested a man for disorderly conduct outside Monticello. The man’s brother and a friend confronted him, demanding that he apologize for making the arrest. When Rosser refused, he was shot in the stomach with a shotgun.
The Marcum family
The first Marcum to be buried in the cemetery that would come to bear the family’s name was Elizabeth “Betty” Smith Marcum, who died in 1897 at the age of 24 or 25. She is buried next to her three-year-old daughter, Florance, who died on Jan. 6, 1901.
Betty Marcum was the wife of Preston Marcum, and was closely tied to the Blevins family who were among the first to be buried at Marcum Cemetery. Her mother-in-law was Charity Blevins, wife of W.C. Blevins. Charity’s first husband was Reason Marcum. It was after his death in 1872 that she married W.C. Blevins. Preston was the youngest of their four children.
Preston Marcum was buried at the cemetery in 1942, and his second wife, Dora Stephens, was buried there six years later.
In 1912, 22-year-old Oda Denton Marcum was buried at the cemetery. He was the son of Joseph Marcum and Margery Roberts Marcum, both of whom would be buried there later. Joseph Marcum was also the son of Charity Smith Blevins, a brother to Preston Marcum.
Oda Marcum’s son, Oda Denton Marcum Jr., was buried at the cemetery when he died in 1943 at the age of 30. Oda Marcum Sr.’s wife, Martha Smith, remarried to Emmett Walker. She is buried at the cemetery, as well.
Finally, 10-month-old Wilma Jean Marcum was buried at the cemetery in 1938. She was the daughter of Clayburn and Mary Roberts Marcum.
The Fetterman family
You may remember the story of John P. Fetterman, the Union soldier who marched through Scott County as part of Gen. Ambrose Burnside’s army in 1863 and liked it so much here that he later returned and settled down here.
As the Independent Herald detailed in the previous story, Fetterman was a distant cousin to John K. Fetterman, the Pennsylvania Democrat who was elected to the U.S. Senate last year.
John P. Fetterman was originally from Pennsylvania, too. He served in the U.S. army when he marched through here in 1863, en route to liberate Knoxville and East Tennessee from the Confederacy. Later, he returned and settled on Smith Creek in eastern Scott County, where he started a bowl factory. He later served as postmaster at the Smith Creek post office, which was named Bowl, Tenn., because of Fetterman’s bowl factory.
Fetterman and his wife, Viola, arrived at Smith Creek around 1885. Their factory was called Fetterman Bowl Company, and was located near the present-day New Salem Baptist Church.
Later, Fetterman closed his bowl factory and moved to Williams Creek west of Oneida. The post office at Bowl was closed and consolidated with Oneida.
Once he moved to Oneida, Fetterman built the first permanent meeting house for the First United Methodist Church of Oneida. He sold his wood mill to Edgeby, Ellis & Kellog of Lexington, Ky., and it was renamed Interior Lumber Co.
Fetterman died in 1906 and is buried at Marcum Cemetery. His daughter-in-law, Margaret “Maggie” Cooper Fetterman, was also buried at the cemetery when she died in 1912, at the age of 25. Maggie — whose father, Eli Cooper, is also buried at Marcum Cemetery — married Fetterman’s son, John Lawrence Fetterman, who would later move away from Scott County and settle in Kentucky.
John L. and Maggie Fetterman also had a 13-month-old son, Clifford, who was buried at Marcum Cemetery.
Another of John L. Fetterman’s children, John Fetterman, was a Pulitzer Prize winner whose work appeared in The Saturday Evening Post, National Geographic, Time and other publications.
The modern era
The Marcum Cemetery remains active, with well over a dozen burials there since 2000.
The most recent person to be buried at Marcum Cemetery was Don Stanley, who died in October 2022, at the age of 88.
Other recent graves include 97-year-old Eva Acres Davis in February 2022 (her parents, Rhodes and Bertha Reed Acres, are also buried there, as is her husband, Joe Davis, who died in 2015), Naomi Pierce Jeffers in November 2021 (her husband, Billy Joe Jeffers, was buried there in 2016), and John Victor Bilbrey in December 2020.
J.V. Bilbrey’s parents, Herbert Conrad and Julia Sexton Bilbrey, are buried at the cemetery, as are his grandparents, Jessie Vernada Bilbrey and Masouria Sexton Bilbrey. J.V. Bilbrey’s great-grandparents, Christopher Columbus Sexton and Nancy Phillips Sexton, are buried at Marcum Cemetery, as well.
Christopher Columbus Sexton was a grandson of Timothy Sexton Jr. and great-grandson of Revolutionary War veteran Timothy Sexton Sr. Both of them are buried at Rob Sexton Cemetery.
J.V. Bilbrey’s brother, Oneida businessman Paul E. Bilbrey, was buried at Marcum Cemetery in 2012. Paul Bilbrey’s wife, Virginia Burchfield Bilbrey, was buried there in 2020. They had a daughter, Paula Bilbrey, who was buried at Marcum Cemetery in 2019.
Finally, J.V. and Paul’s brother, World War II veteran Herbert Kenneth Bilbrey, was buried at the cemetery in 1988.
