Sacred Ground: Litton Cemetery
Located along a small knoll along Litton Road in Oneida is the Litton Cemetery. Sprawling across a little more than two acres, this cemetery dates back to the 1880s, when families like the Littons, the Shepherds, the Terrys and the Coffeys were predominant in this area west of town.
Today, Litton Cemetery has grown to become one of the larger cemeteries in Oneida. It isn’t nearly as large as Hazel Valley Memorial Cemetery or Carson Memorial Park. However, it is similar in size to Marcum Cemetery on the south end of town, and is almost double the size of two other prominent Oneida cemeteries, nearby Coffey Cemetery and Scott Memorial Gardens across town.
The Litton family
It was with James and Anna Litton that the Litton family of Oneida began. James Litton was an important figure in his day, serving as both a school teacher and an attorney, and also serving on the committee tasked with establishing the boundaries of Scott County when it was formed by the Tennessee General Assembly in 1849. He was one of the earliest, and maybe the very first, school teachers in what is now Scott County.
The Litton family migrated from England to the American colonies in the late 17th century with Michael Litton, who was James Litton’s second great-grandfather. The Littons became quite prominent in Virginia, before James Litton’s father, James Edward Litton (1750-1840) moved to the Williamsburg area in southeastern Kentucky and James Taylor Litton moved further southwest to present-day Oneida.
James Litton’s brother, Thomas Litton, made the move to the Oneida area as well, but did not remain here long.
James Litton married Anna Foster in 1818. It’s not clear when they moved to present-day Scott County, but they were here by the time the 1830 census was taken. They likely made the trip at the same time that pioneers Josiah and Elijah Terry and others came to present-day Scott County.
It appears that James and Anna Litton had four children: Sylvester (1821-1851), Oliver (1825-1890), Cornelius (1828-1890) and Littleton (1832-1912). Cornelius Litton, known as “Neal,” was the only one of the four to be buried at the Litton Cemetery on Litton Road. (James and Anna Litton, along with several other members of the family, are buried at the Barney Litton Cemetery off Grave Hill Road, less than a mile away from Litton Cemetery on Litton Road, as the crow flies.)
Neal Litton married Eliza Ann Chitwood (1831-1909) in 1848 and they had a large family, consisting of at least 12 children. It was with their children, through marriage, that the Terry and Coffey families in the Litton Road area came into the picture.
The first of Neal and Eliza Litton’s children, born about 1849, was Anna. Following her were Mary, Nelson, James, Ewell, Arminda, Sarinda, Loranzo, John, William Charles, Rosetta, and Marion, across a span of about 27 years.
At one time, the Litton family was so prominent in Scott County that a Litton Historical Society was founded (in 1959), and it was estimated that more than 50% of the residents of Scott County were either directly or indirectly related to James T. Litton.
Neal Litton was the second person buried at Litton Cemetery when he died on July 19, 1890. Eliza would also be buried there when she died on May 11, 1909. All of their children — with the exception of Mary “Polly” Litton Thompson, who was buried at Marcum Cemetery — were buried at Litton Cemetery. Another exception is the oldest, Anna. She appears to have married William Rosser in 1870, and William Rosser is buried at Litton Cemetery. But it’s not clear what became of Anna.
The Coffey family
Arminda Litton, who also went by “Minda,” married Lewis Coffey (1861-1936). Lewis Coffey was the son of Joseph Coffey (1829-1882) and Beth Ada Strunk (1835-1920), who lived nearby where the Scott County Fairgounds is now located on Stanley Street. It was with Joseph Coffey and his family that the Coffey Cemetery on the family farm on present-day Stanley Street began.
Lewis and Minda Coffey had at least eight children, beginning with Jay Harlan in 1887 and continuing with Joseph Cornelius, Hettie Mae Flinchum, George Walter, Ada Pearl Strunk, Eliza Foster, Florence Tramell, and Charlie. Lewis and Minda and all of their children, with the exception of Ada Strunk, were buried at Litton Cemetery.
The Terry family
Rosetta Litton, or “Rosa,” was the next-to-youngest child of Neal and Eliza Litton. She married William Abner Terry(1873-1967), who served as Scott County Judge from 1934 to 1942. Terry was also a schoolteacher, mail carrier, and a businessman, and served a tenure as the county court clerk.
Terry was the grandson of Josiah Terry (1780-1868), who came to present-day Scott County from Botetourt County, Va., and is said to be the first permanent settler of what we now know as Oneida. William Terry’s father, Milton Terry, is buried at Abner Thomas Cemetery on Dexter Laxton Road.
William Terry’s brother was Alvin C. Terry (1866-1957), who is also buried at Litton Cemetery, as are his son William C. Terry Sr., who was Oneida’s third mayor, and William C. Terry Sr.’s children, Jane Terry Hoffman and her husband Ralph, and Claude “Jumby” Terry Jr. and his wife Romola.
Rosa Litton’s older sister, Sarinda Litton, married William Terry’s brother, Milton Ensley Terry (1871-1938).
The Shepherd family
Nelson Litton was the second-born of the Litton children. He married Nancy Brown in 1874. Their oldest daughter was Florence Litton, born in 1875. She married Leander Horace “L.H.” Sheppard (1867-1950) in 1892. The Sheppard family lived nearby and Oneida’s Sheppard Road is their namesake. L.H. Sheppard was the son of William L. Shepard (1842-1879) and Louisa Harmon (1844-1913). Louisa is buried at Litton Cemetery, as are all of her children, including L.H. Sheppard and his wife, Florence.
The Marcum family
Nelson Litton’s second-born was Louella Litton, in 1876. She married William Henry Marcum, the son of John A. Marcum Jr. (1841-1903) and Arlena Phillips (1853-1945) of Grave Hill. William H. Marcum’s grandfather, John A. Marcum Sr., was the forefather of the Marcum family of West Oneida.
Louella Marcum died in 1916 at the age of 39 and was buried at Litton Cemetery. Her husband would later be buried beside her. She also had an 18-year-old daughter, Grace Marcum, buried at the cemetery in 1918, and another daughter, Moda Marie, who was the longtime postmaster in Oneida and was buried at the cemetery in 1994.
Another daughter, Lula Maye, married Herbert McDonald. They’re both buried at Litton Cemetery, as well.
The cemetery begins
The first burial at Litton Cemetery occurred in 1885, when a four-month-old baby named W.F. Shepherd died the day after Christmas. It’s not clear who his parents were, but L.H. Shepperd and Florence Litton have children buried at the cemetery.
Neal Litton was the second person buried at the cemetery, in 1890, followed by Sarinda Litton Terry in 1892, at the age of 29.
Ethel Terry, the toddler son of Milton and Sarinda Terry, was buried at the cemetery in 1894, followed by William Rosser later that same year.
Hamilton Brown was buried at the cemetery in 1899. He was the father of Nancy Brown, who married Nelson Litton. Following his death was the death of 11-month-old Nelson Sheppard, the son of L.H. and Florence Litton Shepherd, in November 1901.
Henry Stanley, the infant son of William Sherman Stanley and Mollie Litton, was buried at the cemetery in 1905. Mollie was the daughter of Ewell L. Litton and Eliza Rosser, and a granddaughter of Neal and Eliza Chitwood Litton. William and Mollie Stanley had another infant child, Eliza, buried at the cemetery in 1912, and may have had
There were many other children buried at the cemetery in the 1900s, including 12-year-old Hurstel Litton in 1906, infant Reba Litton (the daughter of James Litton and Cora Lee Stephens) in 1908, infant Eva Coffey (the daughter of Joe and Verna Coffey) in 1908, and four-year-old Christeen Sheppard in 1909. Also in 1909, 24-year-old J.C. Litton — the son of Ewell Litton and Eliza Rosser — was buried at the cemetery after being killed in a train accident.
Ties to the Littons of Big South Fork
Not all of the Litton family remained in the area near Oneida, though most did. One notable exception was John Litton, who established the historic Litton Farm in what is now the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area. The farm can be visited by hikers in the Bandy Creek section of the national park, and was established around the beginning of the 20th century.
John Littleton Litton (1855-1935) was the son of Littleton Litton (1832-1912) and Polly Coile (1833-1868). Littleton Litton was the youngest of four children of James T. Litton and Anna Foster. Neal Litton was John Litton’s uncle.
John Litton married Elvira Dawes (1857-1945), and they’re both buried at the Katie Blevins Cemetery at Bandy Creek. They had five children: Ezra, Calvin, Elizabeth Terry, Poppie Blevins and Ellen Kidd. Elizabeth married Elijah L. Terry (1872-1946), and they’re both buried at Litton Cemetery.
Following John Litton’s death in 1935, the Litton farm at Bandy Creek was purchased by Charles Rudy “General” Slaven.
