Sacred Ground: Chitwood Cemetery
Today, Winfield is a sleepy little town on the TN-KY border. It is named for Gen. Winfield Scott, the War of 1812 hero who Scott County was also named after.
But while Winfield, as an incorporated town, took the name of “Old Fuss and Feathers,” as Gen. Scott was known in military circles, it was for many years known as Chitwood. And the Chitwood influences remain strong today. In addition to the many Chitwoods who still live throughout the area, several community landmarks — including Chitwood Mountain and Pleasant Grove — bear the family name.
And, at the center of it all, just a stone’s throw from the Gen. Winfield Scott Memorial Park off Pine Grove Road, is the Chitwood Cemetery, where many of the Chitwood family have been buried through the years.
Chitwood Cemetery has grown io include more than 650 graves. It is meticulously maintained, and is very much active. It is located on a dead-end street behind Second Bethlehem Baptist Church, less than a mile from U.S. Highway 27 that runs through the center of town.
The Chitwood family
There was no Highway 27 when James Chitwood settled in this area around the beginning of the 19th century. There was no Winfield Park, either. Nor was there a Pine Grove Road. There was just a wide expanse of fertile flatlands at the base of the mountains, covered mostly in virgin timber, and plenty of opportunity.
James Chitwood (1751-1839) was a Revolutionary War soldier who fought for the Patriots. But he was from a family that was loyal to the crown. In fact, his father, Richard Chitwood Sr. (1722-1785) was a Torie, and he had an uncle who was hanged after the Battle of Kings Mountain for fighting on the side of Great Britain.
The Chitwood family came to America in the late 17th century. James Chitwood’s grandfather, Matthias Chitwood Sr. (1681-1754) sailed from England and settled in Powhatan County, Va. It was there that James Chitwood was born on June 21, 1751. He was from a large family; Richard Chitwood and Winnie Randolph had many children.
James Chitwood married Martha White (1749-1834), who was also from Virginia, about 1769. They moved to North Carolina and it was there that the first of their children were born.
When the colonies fought for their independence, James Chitwood joined the rebellion. He fought under Gen. Thomas Sumter of South Carolina. Sumter was called the “Carolina Gamecock” by the British because of his fierce fighting style, which began after British soldiers burned his home. Lord Gen. Charles Cornwallis called Sumter his “greatest plague” and Sumter’s army was credited with driving Cornwallis out of South Carolina and turning the tide of the war. Fort Sumter — site of the first shots that were fired in the Civil War — was named after Thomas Sumter, and the University of South Carolina’s mascot is the gamecock because of Sumter.
The Battle of Kings Mountain, fought in October 1780, is said to have been the largest American-on-American fight of the Revolutionary War. That is, it pitted colonists who were fighting for independence (the Patriots) against colonists who remained loyal to the British crown (the Tories). Among the Tories at Kings Mountain were James Chitwood’s father, his uncle, and two of his cousins.
The Patriots — led by the so-called “Overmountain Men” under the command of Gen. John Sevier who marched into North Carolina from Tennessee and other western frontier areas — scored a decisive victory that day, and many of the Tories were captured, including the Chitwoods.
While being marched west along the roads of Carolina, the Patriots stopped and held a mock court. They sentenced all of their prisoners to hang.
Capt. James Chitwood — the uncle of our story’s James Chitwood — was one of the first to hang. Eight other men were also executed before some women who lived on the farm where the events were taking place begged higher commanders to intervene and stop the hangings. Their pleas were heard, and the executions stopped.
James Chitwood’s father, Richard Chitwood, had been sentenced to hang but was granted a 99-year reprieve. So were the two sons of Capt. James Chitwood — our James Chitwood’s cousins — who had been captured in the fight.
After the war ended, James Chitwood moved his family to what we now call Winfield, settling in the Pine Grove community where the Chitwood Cemetery is now located. Making the move with Chitwood was one of his cousins who had been sentenced to hang, Shadrach Chitwood. The two men had fought on opposite sides during the war, but lived side-by-side after the war. However, Shadrach Chitwood would eventually move to Missouri.
Meanwhile, James Chitwood and Martha White had at least seven children. One of them, daughter Winnie, married Stephen Robertson and settled in Indiana. The rest — Pleasant, Lazarus, William, Daniel, Elizabeth and Richard — all settled in the Winfield area. Perhaps ironically, none of them are buried at Chitwood Cemetery.
How did Chitwood get its name?
Like many early communities, Chitwood was named because of its post office. The post offices in those days weren’t nearly as fancy or organized as they are today. They were usually located in the homes or stores of whomever served as postmaster. And when the postmaster changed, the post office moved.
Sometimes these post offices drew their names from distinct features of the community. For example, the post office at Smith Creek was named “Bowl” because of the Fetterman bowl factory there. Hence, that community was known for several years as Bowl, Tenn. And, sometimes, the post offices were named for whomever served as postmaster. The community of Slick Rock at Brimstone was known as Hughett, Tenn. because the postmaster there was a Hughett. And this was the case at Chitwood, where James Chitwood served as postmaster. The post office was located inside his home on what is now Pine Grove Road.
The family cemetery
Were James Chitwood and Martha White buried at the cemetery that now bears their family name? That cannot be conclusively proven, but they’re believed to have been.
There are no markers bearing the names of either of these pioneer settlers. However, there are a number of unidentified graves at Chitwood Cemetery, and it is commonly accepted that both James and Martha were buried there when they died — she in 1834 and he in 1839.
The first grave at Chitwood that can be conclusively proven dates to 1842. That lends itself to the idea that James and Martha were buried there, since their deaths occurred just a few years earlier.
The 1842 grave is that of Barbary Chitwood, who was two months old when she died on Sept. 29, 1842. The headstone denotes that she was the daughter of “M/M C.” It is not clear who her parents were.
It was some time after that before the next burial occurred at Chitwood Cemetery. In fact, 33 years elapsed before Joseph Chitwood was buried there in 1875. He was a 7-year-old boy, the son of Francis M. Chitwood and Sarah Meadors.
Francis Chitwood (1844-1910) was a Civil War veteran who — like many other members of the community — enlisted in the Union army when Gen. Ambrose Burnside encamped at Chitwood while marching his 10,000-man-strong army through Scott County towards Knoxville in 1863. He was the son of James L. Chitwood, who was the son of Lazarus Chitwood. Little Joseph Chitwood was a second great-grandson of James and Martha Chitwood.
Joseph Chitwood’s mother, Sarah, died the following year at the age of 30 and was buried at the cemetery. Her husband, Francis, remarried the following year to Emily Chitwood, a distant cousin, and they had several more children.
Francis Chitwood, Emily Chitwood, and most of Francis Chitwood’s children would be buried at Chitwood Cemetery. In addition to Joseph, there was James L. Chitwood in 1925, Nelson R. Chitwood in 1893, Johnny Chitwood in 1952, Asberry Chitwood in 1946, Betty Murphy in 1941, and George H. Chitwood in 1919. Exceptions are daughters Martha Orwin and Cynthia Gastineau, who married and moved away from Winfield. There was another daughter, Sophia Ryan, whose burial location isn’t clear.
The next member of the family to be buried there was Elizabeth Chitwood in 1881. She was the wife of James L. Chitwood, the grandmother of 7-year-old Joseph Chitwood.
The Duncan family
Between the deaths of Sarah Meadors Chitwood in 1876 and James L. Chitwood in 1880 were the deaths of Joshua L. Duncan Jr. (1836-1877) and Granvill Duncan (1865-1880).
Joshua Duncan, also known as “J.J.,” was a Union army veteran who enlisted during Burnside’s march through Scott County in 1863. He was the son of Josh Duncan Sr. (1808-1890) and Rosie Sartin (1810-1878).
The Duncan family settled in Winfield, beginning with J.J.’s parents, Josh Duncan Sr. and Rosie Sartin, both of whom are buried in the family cemetery there.
J.J. Duncan married Sarah Ann Chitwood (1834-1901), who was the daughter of Joel Chitwood and Elizabeth Trammell. Joel Chitwood was the son of William Chitwood and a grandson of James Chitwood.
Fifteen-year-old Granvill Duncan, who died in 1880, was the second-born child of J.J. and Sarah Ann Duncan. He had an older sister, Nancy, who married Calvin Baker — of the Baker family from nearby Capuchin — and a younger sister, Rosey, who married Mart Trammell, a great-grandson of Revolutionary War veteran Capt. Dennis Trammell, who also settled in the Winfield area. All are buried at Chitwood Cemetery.
The Baker family
Four-month-old Frank Finley Baker died in 1884 and is the first member of the Baker family to be found at Chitwood Cemetery. As previously pointed out, the Baker family married into the Duncan family, which had previously married into the Chitwood family.
Frank Finley was the baby boy of Calvin Baker and Nancy Duncan. He was the nephew of young Granvill Duncan, who was buried at the cemetery four years earlier.
Calvin and Nancy Baker would both be buried at the cemetery when they died, she in 1919 and he in 1936. They had several other children buried there, as well, including their oldest, Bill Baker, who died in 1949; Sally Ann Chitwood, who married a great-grandson of James and Martha Chitwood, David Howard Chitwood, and died in 1961; John Henry Baker, who died in 1931; Granville Baker, who died in 1976; and Luther Baker, who died as a child in 1901.
There was a 10-year-old Joshua Baker who was buried at the cemetery in 1887. It’s not clear whose son he was; perhaps he was another of the children of Calvin and Nancy Baker.
The Blevins family
On either side of a huge cedar tree on the south side of Chitwood Cemetery are the graves of Daniel Blevins (1844-1910) and his wife Polly Chitwood Blevins (1848-1936).
Daniel Blevins was a Civil War veteran who served in Company I of the 30th Kentucky Infantry. He was the son of Jacob and Catharine “Catie” Smith Blevins who lived near Bandy Creek, and a grandson of Jonathan Blevins Jr., who was one of the first white settlers of what is now the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area. Daniel’s father was the first person buried at the Katie Blevins Cemetery.
Polly Chitwood was one of the daughters of James L. Chitwood and Bettie Thompson, a great-granddaughter of James Chitwood and Martha White. She married Daniel Blevins in 1870.
Daniel and Polly Blevins had 10 children. Several of them are buried at Chitwood Cemetery, including Rev. Miley Blevins (1878-1964), Lenora Loudin (1883-1949), Mary Grant (1889-1910) and young Luesinda Blevins (1890-1904).
The Crabtree family
The Crabtrees were also prominent in this part of Winfield, and were intricately linked to the Chitwood family.
William Abner Crabtree (1852-1938) was the son of James Crabtree and Elizabeth Smith. He married Melvina “Meldy” Trammell (1855-1921), a descendant of Revolutionary War veteran Dennis Trammell. He had six children: son James, born in 1875; John Albert (1877), Andrew Jackson (1880), Isaac (1886), Sarah (1886), Jessie (1889), and a son who died in infancy (1899).
It was Will Crabtree who named Pine Grove Baptist Church.
Both Will Crabtree and Meldy Trammell Crabtree were buried at Chitwood Cemetery. Also buried there are four of their children who died young: twins Isaac and Sarah, who died less than a month apart in 1888, at the age of two; Jessie, who died in infancy in 1889; and another son who died in infancy in 1899.
Andrew J. Crabtree was also buried at the cemetery, as was his first wife, Sarah Ann Chitwood, who died young, and his later wives, Sarah Chambers and Emma Chitwood.
Many of Andrew Crabtree’s 10 children are also buried at Chitwood Cemetery.
Will Crabtree had a brother, Richard Crabtree (1859-1932) who is also buried at Chitwood Cemetery, as is his wife, Emma Shelton (1863-1945). Three of their sons, Absalom “Abb” Crabtree (1890-1960), William F. Crabtree (1893-1976) and Robert (1899-1969) were buried at the cemetery, along with many of their grandchildren.
The grave in the woods
In the edge of the woods on the south side of Chitwood Cemetery is a headstone that looks remarkably out of place. It is that of Ray Duncan, who died in 1929 at the age of 29.
It looks out of place because it is out of place. This is the original stone of Henry Ray Duncan, and it was moved to the side after being replaced with a double stone when Duncan’s widow, Emma Wilson, died in 1988.
Ray Duncan was the son of Rev. James H. Duncan (1875-1967) and Arminda Murphy (1880-1941), both of whom are buried at Chitwood Cemetery. He was a grandson of David S. Duncan and Armelda Chitwood, and a descendant of James Chitwood and Martha White.
Duncan married Emma Wilson, the daughter of Balford Wilson and Nan Wilson, in 1924. The Wilson family also lived in Winfield. They had three children: Pauline, Mamie and Buddie.
