Sacred Ground: Carson Memorial Park
Carson Memorial Park isn’t Oneida’s largest cemetery — though it is large, with more than 1,000 graves. That honor goes to Hazel Valley. Nor is it Oneida’s oldest cemetery — though it is old, too. That honor might go to Coffey Cemetery, though it’s almost impossible to say with absolute certainty.
Through the years, though, Carson Memorial — which is owned by West-Murley and Jones & Son funeral homes — has grown to become, perhaps, Oneida’s most stately cemetery. It includes a mausoleum, the only of its kind in Scott County, and though aging, the statues and sidewalks in the cemetery’s center add an elegant touch that isn’t often found in local cemeteries.
With more than 1,000 graves, Carson Memorial Park has grown to become a true community burial ground. It is the third-largest cemetery in Scott County, behind Hazel Valley and Black Creek Crossroads. And with so many graves, it is impossible to write the story behind each of them.
So, for the purpose of this Sacred Ground article we are going to start at the very beginning, when Carson Memorial Park was just a family burial ground near the Carson property on the south side of town — though Oneida was hardly a “town” at that point, and wouldn’t even be known as “Oneida” until the railroad came through decades later.
These graves, the original cemetery here at Ponderosa Estates near Lake Elizabeth, are located in the upper corner of Carson Memorial Park, separated from the rest of the cemetery by a row of trees on one side and by the gravel lane that winds through the cemetery on another. This original part of the cemetery is sometimes listed as an entirely different cemetery — the Carson Family Cemetery. In fact, there are actually three cemeteries here: Carson Memorial Park, the Carson Family Cemetery in the back corner, and — separated from the rest by a line of trees — the Daugherty Family Cemetery, which consists of a single row of graves.
For all intent and purpose, however, this is all one cemetery. It’s just that it was here, on the upper end, and with the Carson family, where it all began.

The Carson family
You might recall from when the Sacred Ground series visited the nearly forgotten Carson Cemetery at Tunnel Hill that Scott County’s Carson family dates back to John Linn Carson Jr. (1808-1899) and his wife, Catherine Jane Triplett (1815-1893). They’re both buried in the cemetery on the back side of Tunnel Hill, which is where they settled down.
Scott County’s Carson family actually goes back a generation earlier, to John L. Carson Jr.’s father, John Carson Sr., and his wife, Sarah Estes. They moved to present-day Scott County sometime before 1837. But it’s not clear where they were buried or whether they lived at Tunnel Hill, where the youngest daughter of John Carson Jr. married into the Keeton family that was prominent there.
Meanwhile, while John Linn Carson Jr. settled down at Tunnel Hill, his younger brother, James Carson (1825-1902), settled down at Ponderosa. He married Frances Elvina “Frankie” Smith (1826-1911), the daughter of Rev. Isaac Smith (1795-1867) and Matilda Elliot (1800-1867).
Isaac Smith was a Methodist circuit rider who had come to present-day Scott County to preach and had been so infatuated with the place that he settled down here permanently. He owned property all the way from Ponderosa, where the golf course is located today, to Tunnel Hill, near where John L. Carson Jr. settled down with his family. The Methodist church is located on Main Street today, but the congregation first met at Smith’s home — which was located about where the golf course club house is today, a stone’s throw from the cemetery.
James and Frankie’s married on Dec. 6, 1847. Their first child was born the next year. They named her Matilda, after Frankie’s mother, and called her “Tilda.”
The couple would go on to have several more children: John, William, Rebecca Jane, Amanda, Mary, James Bailey, George and Lee.
In 1860, little Tilda — the first-born child of James and Frankie Carson, who had been named after her maternal grandmother — died at the age of 11 and was buried on a small knoll near the family home. This new cemetery would grow to become Carson Memorial Park.
Other members of the family buried here
Several of Tilda’s brothers and sisters, all of whom survived to adulthood and enjoyed long, fruitful lives, were buried beside her at Ponderosa.
John, who married Lucy Ann Chitwood and had 10 children, was buried there in 1921. His wife was buried at Marcum Cemetery a couple of miles away. They had a son, Abner Luther, who died at the age of three in 1889 and is buried at Carson Memorial.
William Henry, who married Polly Pemberton and later married Angeletta Pemberton after Polly died at a young age, was buried there in 1934. Both of his wives were also buried there.
Rebecca Jane, who married Andrew J. Thomas, was buried there in 1937. Her husband was buried at Grave Hill. Her only daughter, Bertie Dell, was buried at Carson Memorial, as well, in 1967.
George Washington Carson was buried there in 1942.
Amanda, who married Pleasant Winfred Chambers and had four children, was buried there in 1947, as was her husband.
Polly Emiline was buried there in 1951.
James Bailey, who married Lotena Pemberton and had three children, was buried there in 1952, as was his wife. Their son, Leon, died at age 15 and was buried there in 1915.
The only of James and Frankie’s children not buried at Carson Memorial was Lee A. Carson, who moved to Harriman as an adult and was buried there.
Leland Gates Carson (1891-1969) was elected the Town of Oneida’s first mayor in 1917. He was the son of William Henry Carson and Angeletta Pemberton. He was also the founder of Jellico Grocery Co., which started as Carson Bros., and a longtime president of First National Bank. He married Mabel Terry, an adopted sister to William Claude Terry Sr., who served as Oneida’s third mayor in the 1920s. Leland Carson is also buried at Carson Memorial, as is his wife and their only daughter, Helen Gates Carson, who died in 2009.
Leland Carson’s sister, Sophronia, was buried at Carson Memorial when she died in 1900 at the age of 19.
Meanwhile, John Linn Carson Jr. had a son, John C. Carson, who was buried at Carson Memorial in 1913. He married Lewcinda Terry, the granddaughter of Rev. Isaac Smith (daughter of Mary Matilda Smith and James Terry), and she is buried at the cemetery as well. They had an infant daughter, Nancy, buried there in 1880; and a young son, John L., buried there in 1883.
Polly Emiline Carson had an infant son, Montrey Carson, buried there in 1884.
Through the years, a number of other members of the Carson family were buried at Carson Memorial. In recent years, burials have included Oneida businessman Hollis Carson, the owner of Carson’s Budget Tires. He died in 2017 at the age of 71. His wife, Jannie Burress, was buried there in 2022. Hollis was the great-grandson of John C. Carson and Lewcinda Terry.
Hazel Terry Carson was buried there in 2018. She was the widow of Andrew John Carson, a grandson of John C. Carson and Lewcinda Terry.
Arzo Carson was the most recent member of the Carson family to be buried at Carson Memorial Park, in February 2023. He was a former district attorney general and the father of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. His wife, Shirley June Laxton, was buried there in 2021. Arzo was a great-grandson of John Linn Carson Jr.
The Smith family
Rev. Isaac Smith, the Methodist circuit rider who moved to Oneida and was the father-in-law of James Carson, was originally from Virginia. He was the son of Thomas Richard Smith (1765-1840) and Jean Caruthers (1765-1837). He married Matilda Elliot in White Rock, Va. on Jan. 8, 1818. They had 10 children.
It’s not clear when Smith — described by historian H. Clay Smith, who was a direct descendant, as a “fiery old circuit rider” — moved to Scott County. But his circuit took him from White Rock in Virginia to Campbell County in Tennessee by way of the Burnside Trail. That trail passed through Hazel Valley and Verdun to Ponderosa.
It was in 1837 that Smith secured a land grant that included all of the territory of present-day Ponderosa Estates east to Tunnel Hill.
When the Methodist church was first organized, services were held at the home of Smith’s son-in-law, Jim Terry. Terry married Smith’s daughter, Polly, and they lived in the Tunnel Hill area. Jim and Polly Terry were the parents of Lewcinda Terry, who married John C. Carson.
The first Methodist church was built at the site of what is now the golf course clubhouse at Ponderosa sometime after 1845.
The Smith family had troubles in Scott County during the Civil War. While most of the county was loyal to the Union, the Smiths’ allegiances were to the Confederacy. Smith was one of only 19 men in Scott County who voted to secede from the Union in 1861.
When Smith used his pulpit to preach his sympathy for the South, frictions grew within the church, and some of his own family left to join the Baptist congregation. One of his sons, deputy sheriff Ewell Smith, enlisted in the Confederate army, and he also had two sons who served in the rebel army.
During the war, a group of Union loyalists showed up at Smith’s Ponderosa home intent on attacking him and one of his sons, as related in H. Clay Smith’s Dusty Bits of the Forgotten Past. Smith’s son fired on the Unionists, striking one of them in the leg. As a result, Rev. Smith left Scott County and returned to Virginia, and services ceased at the Methodist church.
However, Smith returned to Scott County after the hostilities had ceased, and Methodist services continued at Ponderosa until his death in 1867.
Among his children, Rebecca Jane (1828-1888) married Stephen A. Hatfield (1835-1923) and they’re both buried at Carson Memorial Park.
Another, Matilda (1838-1928) married William Carson (1834-1896), the son of John Linn Carson Jr. However, they are not buried at Carson Memorial; instead, they’re buried on top of the hill nearby at Cherry Fork.
