Sacred Ground: Black Creek Crossroads
Black Creek Crossroads Cemetery is Scott County’s second-largest cemetery and, in recent years, its fastest-growing cemetery. It is currently the final resting place of more than 1,450 people — placing it second in size only to Hazel Valley Memorial Cemetery, where just over 1,500 people are buried.
Black Creek Crossroads Cemetery dates back only to the 1890s. Then, as now, the Ellis family was prominent in the Black Creek Crossroads community, and so it is no surprise that this family features prominently at the community’s cemetery.
Black Creek Crossroads is a little off the beaten path these days, having been bypassed by Highways 27 and 52 through Robbins and Elgin. But there was a time when this crossroads was a major transportation hub in southern Scott County — where roads from Robbins, Mountain View, Sheep Ranch and Honey Creek intersected as they led on to communities like Rugby and Oneida and beyond. The road that is now Sheep Ranch Road and intersects with the others at the crossroads was once called the Huntsville-Jamestown Road.
There, at the crossroads, is Black Creek Crossroads United Baptist Church. And, on a hill behind the church, the cemetery of the same name (although it is managed separately from the church). While the cemetery is slightly smaller than Hazel Valley Memorial Cemetery in terms of the number of graves there, it is the largest cemetery in Scott County in terms of acreage. It sprawls across nearly eight acres, with about five more acres making future expansion possible. For comparison’s sake, Hazel Valley is roughly half that size, at just under four acres.
The oldest graves are located at the front of the cemetery, directly behind the church. This is the old, original section of the cemetery, and it is mostly full of members of the Ellis and Smithers families. Most of the newest graves are located in what is currently the back of the cemetery.
A bench near the back of the cemetery is dedicated to the memory of the Elliot, Smith, York and Sanders families “who have donated land” for the cemetery.
Black Creek Crossroads is a meticulously-maintained cemetery, and members of the committee go to great lengths to catalog the names of the people who are buried at the cemetery. It is perhaps the only cemetery in Scott County with a dedicated memorial to the military veterans who are buried within it.
The Ellis family
Through the years, there has been perhaps no more famous Ellis in Scott County than Sheriff Richard Ellis, the minister sheriff who was assassinated in the doorway of the old county jail in 1925 amid a moonshine war. Sheriff Ellis was a cousin of the Ellises who settled at Black Creek Crossroads.
The Crossroads Ellis family dates back to Edward and Jane Griffith Ellis. They were the parents of Callaway “Cal” Ellis (1850-1927), who also served as sheriff of Scott County briefly in 1901. Cal Ellis was a first cousin of Richard Ellis. His grandfather was James Ellis Sr., who was Richard Ellis’s great-grandfather. Cal Ellis’s father, Edward Ellis Sr. (1818-1875) and Richard Ellis’s grandfather, James Ellis Jr. (1824-1889) were brothers.
Another close relative of note was A.V. Ellis, who served as superintendent of school in Scott County in the 1940s and early 1950s. His grandfather was Edward Ellis Jr., who was a brother of Cal Ellis.
James Ellis Sr.’s father was Robert Ellis Sr. (1760-1849). He was originally from Virginia but wound up in Indiana. That’s where most of his family spent the rest of their lives, although one of his children moved his family to Missouri. James Ellis Sr. may have been the second exception, winding up in Scott County.
Family histories often record James Ellis’s marriage to his wife, Sarah Isham, as occurring in New River in 1813. It should be noted, however, that there is no census records of any Ellises in Scott County prior to 1860.
In fact, the 1850 census shows James and Sarah Ellis still living in Indiana — where James Ellis’s parents and several of his siblings lived — with seven of their children, ranging from 26-year-old Robert to 7-year-old Jane. However, that same census recorded the birthplaces of several of the Ellis children as Tennessee — which lends itself to the idea that the Ellis family lived in Scott County for a time before moving to Indiana to be near the rest of the James Ellis’s family.
By the 1860 census, Sarah Ellis was in Scott County, living with three of her children: 29-year-old Nancy, 27-year-old Lucy and 19-year-old Joseph, all of whom were listed in that census as having mental disabilities. James Ellis died in 1854.
Also recorded in that 1860 census was Edward Ellis Sr., one of the children of James and Sarah Ellis, living in Fentress County with his wife, Jane Griffith, and nine of their children, ranging in ages from 19 to one. The seventh of those children was Cal Ellis, listed as age five.
By the 1870 census, Edward and Jane Ellis had moved to Scott County. At that time, Cal Ellis was the oldest child still living at home.
It is not clear where Edward Ellis was buried when he died in 1875. However, Jane Ellis — who went by Jennie — was buried at Black Creek Crossroads when she died in 1898, and she is the first generation of the Ellis family known to be buried there.
Meanwhile, a number of Edward and Jennie’s children were buried at Black Creek Crossroads, besides Cal.
There was Sarena, or “Rena,” the oldest, who married Civil War veteran Fountain Phillips and was buried there in 1912. Fount Phillips was one of the children of early Scott County official Jehu Phillips and his wife Rebecca Sexton. He was captured by Confederate forces at the Battle of Rogersville late in the war and was held in the infamous prisons at Belle Isle and Andersonville. He was one of the fortunate ones who survived his stay at those prisons and was able to return home. He and Rena had at least five children, three of whom — Parzida Lackey, Ellen Cotton and John L. Phillips — are buried at Black Creek Crossroads.
Also buried there was Martin Van Buren Ellis, named after the former U.S. president, who was born in 1845. He married Thursa Jane Parker, who grew up at Sheep Ranch and was the brother of James Crawford Parker, Scott County’s first superintendent of schools and later a county judge, and the father of Sam Parker, a prominent University of Tennessee athlete who was murdered in Helenwood in 1906. Martin and Thursa Jane had at least nine children. Of those, several are buried at Black Creek Crossroads, including Lewrettie Whitecotton, Alvin F. Ellis, Nancy Tudor, Millie Jones, and Sarah Ellis. Sarah died in 1904 at age 15 of an accidental gunshot wound.
Edward Ellis Jr. was born in 1947. He married Martha Silcox (1854-1915), the daughter of Richard Silcox and Manerva Jones. His mother-in-law is also buried at Black Creek Crossroads. Edward and Martha Silcox had eight children, some of whom are buried at Crossroads, including: Sophie Reed and her husband Wiley; Mitchel Ellis; and Berlin Ellis and his wife, Amy Laytham. A number of Richard Ellis Jr.’s grandchildren are also buried at Crossroads. One of Edward Ellis’s grandchildren not buried at Crossroads is Scott County Schools superintendent A.V. Ellis, who is buried at Reed Cemetery in New River. A.V. Ellis’s father, Berbin Ellis, married Pernie Robbins, who was the daughter of Scott County Judge Mitt Robbins. Berlin Ellis, the youngest of Edward Ellis’s children, had eight children. The oldest, Muriel, was buried at Crossroads in 1941 at the age of 27. A baby daughter was buried there in 1915. Several of his other children were buried there, too: A.C. Ellis, Laurence Duncan and first husband Adger Jeffers, Chad Ellis and wife Vivian, and Ovie. The only exceptions are two daughters who moved away from Scott County. Chad Ellis’s sons include Dr. Spencer Ellis, Huntsville dentist, and Scott County attorney Howard Ellis. They are the great-grandsons of Edward Ellis Jr.
Cal Ellis, where we began this story, married Mahulda “Hulda” Buttram (1856-1892), the daughter of James Buttram and Jane Goad of New River. They had at least three children, two of whom — Rosa Newport and infant Adda Ellis — were buried at Black Creek Crossroads.
The first of the Ellis children not buried at Black Creek Crossroads was Abrana “Banna” Willoughby (1850-1929), who was instead buried at nearby Kilbeck Cemetery at Black Creek. Her younger sister was Savarie Jane “Sophie” Ellis, who was buried at Black Creek Crossroads. Sophie married Wiley Reed, of the Reed family at nearby Mountain View, and they had a large family. Among their children buried at Black Creek Crossroads was Lonus Reed, who died in France during World War I. Most of their children were buried at the Reed Cemetery at New River.
Parizidia Ellis, born in 1858, married Alford J. Willoughby, and they’re both buried at Black Creek Crossroads. Among their children buried there were Andrew Johnson Willoughby, Henry Willoughby, Jack E. Willoughby, Lindsay Willoughby, and 8-month-old Addie Willoughby.
Andrew Johnson Ellis was born in 1861 and named for the future president who would visit Scott County just two weeks after his birth and deliver a fiery speech on the courthouse steps in Huntsville urging Scott Countians to vote against secession — which they did. He married Rosa Jane Parker from the Sheep Ranch Parker family; she was a first cousin to Thursa Jane Parker, who married Andrew’s brother, Martin Van Buren Ellis. Among their children buried at Black Creek Crossroads were Casville Ellis, Carlie Ellis, J. Harlan Ellis, and Alma West.
Mitchel Ellis was also buried at the cemetery in 1914.
Ardel Ellis was buried at the cemetery in 1946. He also married into the Parker family, like two of his brothers. His wife Burnetta Parker. Among their children buried at Black Creek Crossroads were Walter Ellis, Raba Lackey, Minnie Wright and Weltha Smith.
Finally was Annis Ellis Stonecipher, who married Jessie Stonecipher. They’re both buried at the cemetery, as well. One of their sons, Ira C. Stonecipher, was also buried there.
Many of the children of Edward and Jennie Ellis had grandchildren who were also buried at Black Creek Crossroads.
The cemetery begins
The first burial at Black Creek Crossroads Cemetery occurred in May 1891, when infant Rebeckey Smithers died. She was the daughter of Spanish-American War veteran James “Bud” Smithers (1868-1933) and Zelphia West (1871-1952). Her parents are buried at the Smithers Cemetery off Sims Road in Robbins. Zelphia was a second great-granddaughter of Revolutionary War veteran Timothy Sexton, who is buried at Sexton Cemetery near Round Mountain.
Just two days after Rebeckey died, another child — two-year-old Molly Ellis — died and was buried at Black Creek Crossroads. She has a simple stone that has her name and dates of birth and death hand-carved into it. The missing 1890 census records make it difficult to know who her parents were, but she was almost certainly one of the grandchildren or great-grandchildren of Edward and Jennie Ellis.
That same year, a Hutson infant died. She was the daughter of James Calvin Hutson and Pheby York.
In July 1892, six-month-old Clauda Washam died and was buried at the cemetery. She was the daughter of Leander Washam and Jemima Warwick. Leander, or “Lee,” was a second great-grandfather of Cpl. Rusty Washam, who was killed in the Iraq War in 2006.
Mahaulda Buttram Ellis was the first adult buried at the cemetery in July 1892. She was Cal Ellis’s wife.
The cemetery grows
Once Black Creek Crossroads Cemetery began, it quickly grew. After the first burial in 1891, there were 19 others before the year 1900 brought about the turn of the century. Many of those early burials were members of the Ellis family. But others were members of the Thompson and Phillips families, along with the Shoemaker and Lackey families.
One-year-old Ida Shoemaker was buried at the cemetery in 1893. She was the daughter of Bailey C. Shoemaker and Lavada “Vada” Slagle of the Mountain View community nearby. Two of her sisters would later marry into the Ellis family, including Martha (who married Casville, the son of Andrew and Rosa Parker Ellis), and Fannie (who married Pharoah, also the son of Andrew and Rosa Parker Ellis).
Nineteen-year-old Cordelia Parker Thompson, the young wife of Louis Thompson, was buried at the cemetery in 1893. Her death may have been due to complications of childbirth; her daughter, Pharzina, had been born just a few weeks earlier. Louis Thompson remarried several more times. His next two wives also died young. He married his fourth wife, Rosetta Keeton, just two years before his death. He is also buried at Black Creek Crossroads. His second and third wives, Arminda Ellis and Luvadia Kidd, were buried there, as well. Arminda was the daughter of Edward Ellis Jr. and Martha Silcox, and was a granddaughter of Edward Ellis Sr. and Jennie Griffith.
Another young child, Elizabeth Lackey, may have been buried at the cemetery in 1893. Her grave is said to be marked only with a funeral home marker, but she was likely a member of the Ellis family, as well; several of the Ellis girls married into the Lackey family. (It should be noted that the directory maintained by the Black Creek Crossroads Cemetery Committee does not include a record of Elizabeth Lackey, nor can the funeral home marker be located at the cemetery.)
Yet another child, one-year-old Effie Smithers, was buried at the cemetery in 1894. She was the daughter of Jesse Smithers and Clanzia Buttram. Her parents and most of her siblings were buried there, as well, including infant Wiltha Smithers in 1900 and nine-year-old Eva Smithers in 1918.
With more than 1,400 people having been buried at Black Creek Crossroads in the past 130 years, it would be near an impossibility to touch on the stories of every family represented there. What started as a family burial plot for the Ellis and Smithers families grew to become a community cemetery where many residents of Sheep Ranch, Mountain View, Black Creek, West Robbins, Honey Creek, Grassy Knob and other nearby communities have been buried over the years. Following is an attempt to touch on just a few of those families.
The most prominent family represented at the cemetery, even today, is the Ellis family. Of the more than 1,470 burials there, some 102 have the Ellis surname. That does not include the hundreds of Ellis family members who have different surnames due to marriage.
The Bowling family
Besides the Ellis family, the Bowling family is the largest family represented at Black Creek Crossroads Cemetery.
The first Bowling to be buried at Black Creek Crossroads was Lorain Bowling in 1947. Born Lorain Newport, she married Elihue Bowling (1872-1930). He is buried at Kilbeck Cemetery in Black Creek.
The Bowlings had two sons who are buried at Black Creek Crossroads: Sampson Bowling (1905-1991) and Jimmy Bowling (1913-1995).
Sampson Bowling married Watsie Smith in 1934 and they had a large family. Several of their children are buried at Crossroads, including Flonnie York and her husband Tom; Lloyd Bowling and his daughter, Pamela Smithers; Wilma Bee and her husband Russ and an infant daughter, Rhonda Jo; and Ralph Bowling, who died in 1978 at the age of 22. The couple also have children buried at Kilbeck, including babies Ester and Annie.
The most recent member of the Bowling family buried at Crossroads was Harold Bowling in December 2023. His mother, Lillie Harness Bowling, was buried at Crossroads in 1993.
The Branim family
Perry Huston Branim (1879-1966) was the son of William Branim (1858-1938) and Mira Massengale (1847-1902) of Campbell County. He married Lucinda “Cindy” Clementine Gentry (1881-1948), the daughter of John Gentry (1840-1916) and Leah Robinson (1854-1934) of Fentress County. They had a large family of 13 children: Minnie Ellen, James Roy, Joe, John Riley, Rosia Jane, Wiley Douglas, Lillie Ermman, Ely Glen, Albert Green, Claude Elmer, Laura, Monroe Freeman and Reason “Pete.”
Both Perry and Cindy Branim were buried at Black Creek Crossroads, as were many of their children, including: Minnie York and her husband Charlie; Rosia Wright and her husband Hobert; Wiley; Albert and his wife Ora (and their young sons, Silas and Albert); Monroe; and Pete and his wife Martha.
Several of Perry and Cindy Branim’s children were buried at Kilbeck Cemetery at Black Creek. They also have a number of grandchildren buried at Black Creek Crossroads.
Rosia Branim married Hobert Wright and their family is detailed below. The youngest of the Branim children was Reason “Pete” Branim, who has the football field at Robbins School named in his honor. He married Martha Jeffers in 1945. She was the daughter of Millard Jeffers and Rosie Burress of Robbins.
Pete and Martha Branim had several children, including: Debbie Blair, Beverly Whaley, Felicia Walker, James Branim, Michael Branim, Thomas Branim, Donald Branim, Alfred Branim and Gary Branim. Thomas Branim was buried at Black Creek Crossroads in 2006. Their daughter-in-law, Cheryl Pendergrass Branim, the wife of Don Branim, was buried there in 2018.
The Epperson family
Jess Epperson was buried at Black Creek Crossroads when he died in 1933 at the age of 53. He married Martha Reagan, who died in 1931. They had 10 children, most of whom are buried at Kilbeck.
Their oldest child, however, was Henry Dave Epperson, buried at Black Creek Crossroads. His first wife was Julia Shoemaker, who died in 1933 and is also buried at Crossroads.
Another of Jess and Martha Epperson’s children to be buried at Crossroads was Delmar Epperson and his wife, Artie Goad, and their infant sons Louis, Charles and Donnie, along with adult sons Roy and Ray.
Delmar and Henry had a brother, Albert Epperson, who was killed in action in Italy in World War II.
The most recent member of the family buried at Crossroads was Phyllis Epperson in 2020. She was the daughter of Archie Epperson and Carolyn Dickerson.
The Foster family
Mart Foster was the first member of the Foster family to be buried at Black Creek Crossroads when he died in 1946 at the age of 56. Several of his children were also buried at Crossroads, including Lester Foster Sr. and his wife Elma; Celia Foster; and Dock Foster and his wife Wanda.
Mart Foster had a brother, Melvin Foster, who was also buried at Crossroads.
The most recent member of the family buried there was Sharon Foster, who died in January 2023.
The Jones family
The Jones family is another family well-represented at Black Creek Crossroads Cemetery, dating back to Joshua Jones and his wife, Sarah Storie. Josh Jones died in 1916 at the age of 71. Sarah died four years earlier. Both are buried at Crossroads.
Several of their children were buried at Crossroads, including Jack and his wife Millie Ellis, the daughter of Martin Van Buren Ellis and Thursa Jane Parker; Luther; and Herman.
In 1921, 9-month-old Elvin Jones was buried at the cemetery. He was a grandson of Josh and Sarah Jones; the son of Luther and Helena Jones. His parents were later buried at the cemetery, as well.
Several other Jones children were buried at the cemetery in the next few years, including two-year-old Jessie Jones in 1926, infant Arthur Jones in 1927, and 11-month-old Alma Jones in 1933. Eleven-year-old Johnny Jones was buried at the cemetery in 1940, and infant Gertrude Jones in 1944.
One of the children of Jack and Millie Ellis Jones was Elma Jones (1907-1981). She married Cleopha Elmer Storie (1905-1984) from the Mt. Helen community across the river. They’re both buried at Black Creek Crossroads. They had three children, two of whom died young (including a son who died in infancy). The third was Evelyn Storie (1926-1995), a longtime school teacher at Robbins. She married Albert D. Martin Jr. (1926-1991), the son of Albert Martin Sr. (1891-1965) and Margaret Hunter (1902-1990) who lived nearby. Albert Martin Sr. was a World War I veteran known as “Slim.” Al Martin Road, which connects to Honey Creek Road just before the descent to the Clear Fork River about a mile from the cemetery is named for him.
Albert and Evelyn Martin had four children, one of whom died in infancy in 1954 and is buried at Crossroads. One of their children is Craig Martin, who is currently the postmaster at Helenwood. He married Leshia Walker, and they both currently serve on the Black Creek Crossroads Cemetery Committee.
A separate line of the Jones family included William Alfred Jones, who died in 1978, and his wife Cleda West. They were the in-laws of Scott County Sheriff Julius Lewallen, who was buried at the cemetery in 1998.
Sheriff Lewallen married Betty Lue Jones, the oldest of William and Cleda Jones’ children. All of Julius and Betty’s children are buried at the cemetery, as well: Joe Lewallen, who died at age 19 in a fire at his railroad work site; Linda King; and Terry Lewallen, who died just this month.
Betty Lue’s younger brother was Kenneth Ray Jones (1943-1992), who is also buried at the cemetery, along with his children, Clifford Jones (1961-2017) and wife Barbara (1963-2021), Ronald Dean Jones (1963-2011), Sharon Jones (1968-2021) and Karen Jones (1968-2022).
Yet another line included Mike Jones (1906-1983) of West Robbins, who married Lela Moffett (1908-1997). Their children included John Clarence Jones (1927-1986) and Charles Edward Jones (1930-2012). Charles Jones married Delma Storey (1931-2020), a longtime schoolteacher at both Robbins and West Robbins. They’re all buried at Crossroads.
The Lackey family
The Lackey family features prominently at Black Creek Crossroads. Young Elizabeth J. Lackey may or may not have been buried at the cemetery in 1893, but the Lackey family was certainly a major family in the community by that time.
In 1909, infant Elmer Lackey was buried at the cemetery. He was the son of Alex Lackey (1868-1947) and Parzida Phillips (1874-1920). He had a twin brother, Everett, who would be buried at the cemetery 10 years later, in 1919, after being killed in an accident.
Alex Lackey was the son of Joel Lackey (1830-1919) and Jane Smithers (1844-1917) of Black Creek. Parzida was the daughter of Fount Phillips and Rena Ellis and grew up in the Crossroads community.
Addie Lackey (1908-1995) married Sedley “Sid” Davis (1883-1965) of Black Creek, and they’re both buried at Black Creek Crossroads, as well. Sid Davis’s first wife was Mattie Smith, but she died in 1932. Sid and Addie Davis’s grandson, Jeff Davis, still lives in the Black Creek community and owns the original family farm.
The Smithers family
You may remember that baby Rebeckey Smithers was the first person buried at Black Creek Crossroads in 1891. There have been dozens of members of the Smithers family buried there since, although her parents — Bud Smithers and Zelphia West — and many of the rest of her family are buried at Smithers Cemetery in Robbins.
In fact, many of the graves in the oldest section of the cemetery are members of the Smithers family.
Effie Smithers, another baby, died in 1894 and was buried at the cemetery. Her parents, Jesse Smither and Clanzy Buttram, were later buried there, as were her siblings, Wiltha, Clinton, Ulas and Eva. All of them died young. Clinton was the oldest and was only 23 when he died. Ulas was only in his teens and Eva was a school-aged child when she died in 1918. Wiltha died as a newborn.
The most recent member of the Smithers family to be buried at Crossroads was Bill Smithers in 2022. He was the son of Willie R. Smithers (1917-1993) and Thelma Newport (1921-2012), both of whom are buried at the cemetery. His paternal grandfather, Ed Smithers (1887-1961) was also buried there.
The Wright family
Hobert Wright (1903-1981) married Rosia Jane Branim (1905-1987) and they lived on Grassy Knob a few miles from Black Creek Crossroads Cemetery. They’re both buried at the cemetery, along with most of their deceased children.
Hobert Wright, a long-time Baptist minister who pastored Robbins First Baptist, Helenwood Baptist and others, was the son of George W. Wright (1876-1936) and Julia Silcox (1888-1931), both of whom are buried at Black Creek Crossroads, as well. They married in 1902 in Scott County.
Hobert and Rosia Wright had 11 children. One, daughter Linda, died in infancy in 1948. Another, son Kenneth, died of cancer at the age of eight in 1945. Both were buried at Black Creek Crossroads.
The remaining Wright children lived full lives and most are buried at Black Creek Crossroads, including: Marie Byrd and husband Hubert; Aree Blevins and husband Columbus (and son David Blevins); Flonnie Blevins and husband William; Hazel Debord and husband Bob; Casto Wright and wife Shirley (and daughter Teresa Jones); Ruth Ainsworth; Lois Hogan; and Wanda Compton. The only exception is Flora Terry and husband Clyde, who are buried in the Terry Cemetery on Grassy Knob.
Onlee Garrett is the last surviving Wright child. Her husband, Clifford Garrett, was also buried at Black Creek Crossroads.
Another of George and Julia Wright’s children, Monroe Wright (1905-1930) is also buried at Black Creek Crossroads, along with his wife, Edith, who died at the age of 18 in 1923, and their young son Willard, who died in 1923 at the age of one.
George and Julia Wright also had a daughter, Elsie, who was buried at Black Creek Crossroads when she died in 1938 at the age of 30. She married into the Ellis family, marrying Clarence Ellis. Clarence Ellis was a great-grandson of Edward and Jane Griffith Ellis, the son of Merida Ellis. Elsie had three children, none of whom were buried at Black Creek Crossroads.
George and Julia Wright had two other children: sons Roy and Thoney. They both moved away from Scott County.
Other bits and pieces
Ben Smith (1918-2008) was a lifelong resident of the Black Creek community. Ben Smith Road, which connects Black Creek Road to West Robbins Road, is named for him. He was the son of Dave Smith (1880-1959) and Linnie Human (1879-1965). He married Beatrice Norris (1920-2013). Their son, Fred Smith, still lives at the old family homeplace on the road named for his father. Both Ben and Beatrice Smith were buried at Black Creek Crossroads. He had several siblings buried at Crossroads, as well, including Bertie Todd (1909-1987), Mattie Moore (1913-2001) and Watsie Bowling (1915-1996).
Ora Shoemaker Robbins (1913-1995), Scott County’s first woman superintendent of schools, was buried at Black Creek Crossroads, along with her husband, Jasper Robbins (1906-1974). Their son-in-law, Eddie Culver (1929-2008) was also superintendent of schools, and he is also buried at Crossroads, along with his wife, JoAnn (1935-2014) and a son, Steve (1955-2016).
Cemetery Census
