Robert Hall

Robert Warren Hall (April 8, 1919 – Dec. 1, 1944) was a soldier from Oneida killed in Germany during World War II.

Biography

Born April 8, 1919 in Murray, Ky., Robert W. Hall was the son of Hobert Gilbert Hall (1898-1991) and (1902-1927). His siblings included Iva Olene Owens (1924-2009) and Calvin G. Hall (born 1927). Following his mother’s death in 1927, his father married Effie Owens (1902-1995) and had two more children: Hobert G. Hall Jr. (1930-2016) and Lovoda French (1938-1992).

World War II

PFC Hall enlisted in the U.S. Army on Feb. 28, 1942 and was assigned to Co. C, 33rd Armored Engineers Battalion. He was killed on Dec. 1, 1944 in Germany.

Following his death, his commanding officer, Capt. Edgar J. Albrick, wrote to Hall’s father: “He died on December 1, 1944, of wounds received in action on November 30, 1944, while we were engaged in a particularly hazardous undertaking in Western Germany. During the course of our participation in executing a hazardous mission, heavy enemy fire was encountered and the successful execution of our mission was endangered. Your son, Private First Class Hall, by his heroic actions on this occasion contributed materially to the successful execution of our mission, and in so doing was seriously wounded. Those of us who knew your son always respected him and admired him to his courage and devotion to duty.”

Aftermath

PFC Hall was initially interred at a U.S. Army Cemetery in Holland. However, his remains were later returned to Scott County, and he was buried at the Owens-Posey Cemetery at Stanley Creek.

He received the Purple Heart award. He is listed on the VFW Post 5669 Memorial Wall in Oneida, the Scott County Veterans Memorial in Huntsville, and the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial in Knoxville.
