Johnson Goad

William “Johnson” Goad (about 1842 – Jan. 27, 1865) was a Union soldier from Scott County who died during the Civil War.

Biography

Johnson Goad was the son of Sarah Goad (1827-1905) of Buffalo Creek. Sarah never married; it’s not clear who Johnson’s father was. Others living with Sarah when the 1860 census was taken included Phoebe Goad (born about 1843); Timon Goad, age 12; Nancy Jane Goad, age 9; and John Goad, age 5.

Sarah Goad’s parents were Joshua Goad (1786-1870) and Sallie Smiddy. She was a granddaughter of Revolutionary War veteran Abraham Goad (1740-1816), who settled on New River south of Huntsville following his move to Scott County around the year 1800.

Civil War

Johnson Goad enlisted in the Union army on April 7, 1863 at Liberty, Ky. He was assigned to Co. H, 9th Tennessee Cavalry.

Goad died in a hospital in Knoxville, Tenn. on April 15, 1865, from inflammation of the kidneys. He was buried at Knoxville National Cemetery.

Aftermath

On Aug. 13, 1867, John Marion Cordell, county clerk, wrote a pension claim for Sarah Goad, who claimed that she was “nearly destitute.”

Sarah died in 1905 and was buried at Laxton Cemetery. Her sons Tilmon and John are buried there, as well.
