James Murphy

James Murphy (about 1841 – Feb. 20, 1863) was a Union soldier who died during the Civil War. Paul Roy’s Scott County in the Civil War lists him as James Murphy Jr., citing a regimental roster compiled by David A. Mathews of Cincinnati, Oh. However, Murphy does not appear to have been from Scott County.

There was a James Murphy from Scott County who served in the Civil War. He was listed in Roy’s book as James Murphy Sr. Both men served in Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry. Roy notes that they were referred to as “Jr.” and “Sr.” apparently for the sole purpose of telling them apart, as James Murphy Jr. was 21 when he enlisted on Oct. 25, 1861, and James Murphy Sr. was 25 when he enlisted on Oct. 25, 1861.

James Murphy Sr. survived the war and died in 1922 in Whitley County, Ky. James Murphy Jr. died in Murfreesboro, Tenn. of “breast disease” on Feb. 20, 1863.
