James Gibson

James Gibson (April 16, 1894 – Nov. 2, 1918) was a U.S. Army soldier from Norma who died a non-combatant death during World War I.

Biography

Born April 16, 1894 in Bell County, Ky., James Gibson was the son of Wiley Gibson (1851-1931) and Mary Elizabeth Anderson (1861-1950). He had two siblings: Luther Sharp Gibson (1882-1963) and William Gibson (1888-1963). His paternal grandparents were William Gibson and Elizabeth Maiden. His maternal grandparents were Timothy Anderson and Sarah “Sallie” Gibson.

World War I

Pvt. Gibson enlisted in the U.S. Army in June 1918 and was assigned to Co. D of the 57th Pioneer Infantry Division. He died of pneumonia while in France on Nov. 2, 1918, just nine days before the armistice marked the end of the war.

Pvt. Gibson’s body was returned to Scott County, and he was buried at Antioch Cemetery at Norma, which is also where his brother, Luther, is buried. His parents were buried at Riverview Cemetery at Smokey Junction.
