Hymelas Patten

Hymelas Patten (Hymelias Patton, about 1804-1862) was a Union soldier who died during the Civil War. Although he was listed in Paul Roy’s Scott County in the Civil War, it does not appear that he was from Scott County.

Roy cites a regimental roster compiled by David A. Mathews of Cincinnati, Oh. in his book and includes all names of Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry, since most of them were from Scott County. Some of them, however, were not actually from Scott County.

The 1860 census found 56-year-old Hymelias Patton living in the Maple Springs area of Cumberland County, Tenn. with Nancy Patton and a nine-month-old child, Sarah F. Patton. He lived in Bledsoe County when the 1850 census was taken, with Nancy, three adult children (Mary, William and Alexander) and a 16-year-old, Jesse. He was originally from North Carolina. His wife was Nancy Woods.

Patton enlisted in the Union army on Oct. 25, 1861 and was assigned to Co. G, 2nd Tennessee Infantry. He died of unknown causes at the Cumberland Gap on Aug. 10, 1862.
