Herman Trammell

Herman Trammell (Dec. 13, 1915 – July 12, 1943) was a soldier from Winfield killed in North Africa during World War II.

Biography

Born Dec. 13, 1915, Herman Trammell was the son of Marion Trammell (1891-1962) and Edna Wright (1896-1984).

His siblings included Latha Trammell (1918-1919), Myrtle Cox (1919-1995), Joseph Trammell (1921-2010), Ella Webb (1923-1992), Francis Trammell (1924-1986), O.H. Trammell (1926-1986), Linda Blaine Strunk (1928-1979), William Trammell (1929-1986), Virginia Trammell (1934-1934), Robert Earl Trammell (1935-2013) and Nola Cross (1937-2010).

His third-great-grandfather was Dennis Trammell, a Revolutionary War veteran who was among the first settlers in Winfield.

Prior to going overseas, he worked in the logging industry. He married Gladys Strunk (1920-2002), the daughter of Burdette Strunk (1888-1976) and Myrtle Susan Cordell (1889-1978).

World War II

Pvt. Trammell enlisted in the U.S. Army on Jan. 14, 1941 at Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. He was assigned to Co. H, 180th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division. He was killed in action during the Invasion of Sicily on July 12, 1943.

Aftermath

Pvt. Trammell’s parents received a telegram from the War Department informing them of his death. His body was returned to Scott County, and he was buried at Trammell Cemetery in Winfield following a funeral service at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church that was conducted by Rev. Luther Terry and Rev. Harris Duncan.

He is listed on the VFW Post 5669 Memorial Wall in Oneida and the Scott County Veterans Memorial in Huntsville.

Gladys remarried to Earl Alberta Perry (1928-2019) in 1957. They did not have children.
