Harold Lloyd

Harold Edward Lloyd (Jan. 25, 1913 – Sept. 16, 1944) was a soldier from Robbins killed in World War II.

Biography

Born Jan. 25, 1913 in Norma, Harold E. Lloyd was the son of John Henry Lloyd (1880-1940) and Cynthia Bell Phillips (1878-1946). His siblings included Bertie Mae Sexton (1902-1963), Flora Troxel (1907-1928), Bertha Jeffers (1917-2005), Lawrence Virgil Lloyd (1919-1988) and Hazel Ora Smithers (1922-2003). Lawrence also fought in World War II.

He married Ethel Sexton (1917-1985) of Elgin, the daughter of Timothy Sexton (1878-1953) and Lassie Hutson (1882-1952) and they had four children: Thelma Lewallen (1934-2013), Edna Faye Laxton (1939-1998), Robert Ray Lloyd (1942-2022) and James Harold Lloyd. They lived in the Elgin community.

When he registered for the draft, Harold worked for the Brimstone Coal Company at New River.

World War II

Pvt. Lloyd enlisted in the U.S. Army on Jan. 7, 1944 and was assigned to the 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division. He fought in the European theater of the war.

He was killed on Sept. 16, 1944 in France. No further information is available.

Aftermath

Pvt. Lloyd’s body was returned to Scott County after the war, and he was buried at Sexton-Todd Cemetery on Wolf Creek near Elgin.

He received the Purple Heart award. He is listed on the VFW Post 5669 Memorial Wall in Oneida, the Scott County Veterans Memorial in Huntsville, and the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial in Knoxville.

Ethel did not remarry. She died in 1985 and was also buried at Sexton-Todd Cemetery. Three of his children — Thelma, Edna Faye and Robert Ray — are all buried at Sexton-Todd Cemetery, as well.
