George Wilson

George Wilson (June 4, 1921 – May 22, 1944) was a soldier from Winfield killed during World War II.

Biography

Born June 4, 1921, George Wilson was the son of Jesse Albert Wilson (1888-1971) and Savanah Strunk (1891-1983). His siblings included Edna Wilson (1913-1915), Mary Wooton (1915-1992), Lawrence Wilson (1917-1982), Polly Walker (1919-2024), WIllie Wilson (1923-1994) and Marion Wolford Wilson (1924-1998).

He was not married.

World War II

Pvt. Wilson enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 16, 1941 and was assigned to the 3rd Regiment, 760th Tank Battalion. He died on May 22, 1944 in the Mediterranean area.

Aftermath

Pvt. Wilson’s body was returned to Scott County in August 1948 and he was buried at Wilson Cemetery in Winfield following a funeral service at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church that was conducted by Rev. Leland Thomas.

He received the Purple Heart. He is listed on the VFW Post 5669 Memorial Wall in Oneida, the Scott County Veterans Memorial in Huntsville, and the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial in Knoxville.
