G.K. Young

Granville Kingsley “G.K.” Young (1872-1955) was an Oneida businessman who served as the town’s mayor from 1919 to 1921.

Early Life

Born April 4, 1872 in Morgan County, Tenn., G.K. Young was the son of Andrew Jackson Young (1842-1922) and Orleans Hurst Young (1843-1902). He grew up in the Burrville area near Rugby, and spent a period of his life living at the Rugby colony before moving to Oneida.

Young married Jennie A. Fletcher (1871-1958) and they had three children: daughters Edith (1891-1978) and Flora (1893-1982), and son Clarence Kingsley Young (1899-1976).

Mayor of Oneida

Young was elected the second mayor of Oneida in 1919, replacing Leland Carson. He served a single two-year term, then was replaced by William Claude Terry in 1921.

It’s worth noting that his obituary in 1955 stated that Young twice served as the town’s mayor.

Death

Young died on March 26, 1955, at the age of 82. He was buried at Scott Memorial Gardens. His wife, Jennie, was also buried there in 1958.
