Fowler Hatfield

Fowler Hatfield (1838-1920) was Scott County’s sixth sheriff, serving in that capacity from 1874 to 1876.

Biography

Joseph Fowler Hatfield Jr. was born on Christmas Day 1838 at Norma. He was the son of Joseph Hatfield Sr. and Elizabeth Gibson. He was one of at least five children. His brothers included George Washington Hatfield and James Hatfield. His sisters were Mary Hatfield Whiteaker and Louise Hatfield Neal.

Sheriff

Little is known about Fowler Hatfield’s life. However, he was a farmer who lived at Bull Creek. He was elected sheriff in 1874, replacing Milton Terry. He served in that capacity for a single, two-year term, and was replaced in 1876 by Reuben Hurtt.

Family

Fowler Hatfield married Manerva Gibson on May 12, 1861. They had at least seven children: Keziah Ann Hatfield Collins (1871-1953), Loueasy Marlena Hatfield Collins (1873-1948), Samuel E. Hatfield, James M. Hatfield, Elizabeth J. Hatfield, Amos Monroe Hatfield, and Joseph Hatfield.

Death

Fowler Hatfield died of small pox on April 28, 1920, at the age of 81. He was buried at Hatfield Cemetery in Campbell County, Tenn.
