Floyd Daugherty

Floyd Daugherty (Aug. 4, 1925 – Jan. 25, 1944) was a soldier from Oneida who was killed in Italy during World War II.

Biography

Born in McCreary County, Ky. on Aug. 4, 1925, Floyd Daugherty was the son of Hiram Clay Daugherty Jr. (1880-1938) and Sarah Barzilla Crabtree (1890-1960). His siblings included James Leonard Daugherty (1912-1992), Ernest Daugherty (1915-1980), Lawrence Daugherty (1918-1989) and Nellie Ross (1921-1985). Other siblings included Bernice Trammell and another sister.

The Daugherty family dated back several generations in Strunk, Ky., which is located in southern McCreary County. Floyd’s mother was descended from the Duncan family in Winfield.

Floyd’s father was discovered dead at the mill where he worked in 1938, at the age of 58. A coroner’s inquest determined the cause of death to be a lung hemorrhage.

Although he grew up in McCreary County and still lived there when the 1940 census was taken, Floyd Daugherty listed his residence as Oneida when he signed up for the draft on Dec. 17, 1942. At that time, he was working for Roscoe Kidd of Oneida.

World War II

Pvt. Daugherty enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. He fought in the European theater of World War II.

On Jan. 22, 1944, Pvt. Daugherty and the rest of the 3rd Division was part of the amphibious landing at Anzio Beach in Italy. Three days later, on Jan. 25, 1944, Pvt. Daugherty was killed.

Aftermath

Pvt. Daugherty was interred at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Italy and his mother was informed of his death. He received the Purple Heart award.

He is listed on the VFW Post 5669 Memorial Wall in Oneida, the Scott County Veterans Memorial in Huntsville, and the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial in Knoxville. His mother, Sarah, had remarried to John Speed Patrick in 1940. She lived the remainder of her life in McCreary County and died in 1960. She is buried at Lower Hickory Grove Cemetery in Revelo.
