Dana York

Dana T. York (1921 – March 5, 1944) was a soldier from Winona killed in the Pacific during World War II.

Biography

Born in 1921, Dana T. York was the son of Charlie York (1891-1823) and Luverna Crowley (1895-1921).

Both of his parents died when he was just a baby and were buried at Crowley Cemetery in Winona. He was raised by his aunt, Dorothy Crowley Phillips (1909-2009) of Winona. She married Bob Elvin Phillips (1904-1992) in 1927, when Dana was age six.

He was not married.

World War II

Pvt. York enlisted in the U.S. Army on Oct. 23, 1942 at Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. and was assigned to the 82nd Field Artillery Unit. He was killed in action in the Pacific on March 5, 1944.

Aftermath

Pvt. York was one of 77 soldiers whose remains were returned to the U.S. in April 1951 for burial at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. A funeral service was held in St. Louis on April 10, 1951, and all 77 — including 38 unknown soldiers — were buried in a group.

He received the Purple Heart. He is listed on the VFW Post 5669 Memorial Wall in Oneida, the Scott County Veterans Memorial in Huntsville, and the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial in Knoxville.
