Clay Slaven

Clay Slaven (May 14, 1918 – July 4, 1945) was a World War II soldier from Scott County who died near the end of the war.

Biography

Born May 14, 1918 at Grave Hill west of Oneida, Clay Slaven was the son of John B. Slaven (1877-1933) and Sarah Smith (1877-1968). His siblings included Lonzo Slaven (born about 1899), Inis Parton (1903-1940), Nancy Mabel Keen (1907-1985), Tollie Slaven (1914-1987), and Wilbert Slaven (1916-1999).

World War II

PFC Slaven enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to Troop A, 28th Cavalry. He was listed as living in Cincinnati in 1935 and in Escambia County, Fla. in 1940.

Although he is listed on the Scott County Veterans Memorial in Huntsville, PFC Slaven died stateside of infectious hepatitis on July 4, 1945. He died at Kennedy General Hospital in Memphis. He was buried at Reed Cemetery at New River, where his parents are also buried.
