Caswell C. Cross

Caswell C. Cross (1859-1926) was a career educator and a Scott County School Superintendent in the 1890s.

Biography

Born March 29, 1859, Cross was the son of John C. Cross (1825-1900) and Lucinda Acres (1825-1885). He was a first cousin, once removed, to Ovia Cross, who would serve as superintendent of schools in the 1920s. Cas Cross’s father and Ovia Cross’s grandfather were brothers. He was also a cousin to Bailey Cross, who served as superintendent of schools in the 1970s.

Cross was one of six children.

He married Sarah Elizabeth Hatton on Christmas Day in 1881. They had one surviving child, Hattie. They had another child who died in infancy.

Scott County School Superintendent

Cross was appointed superintendent of schools by the Scott County Quarterly Court in 1891, succeeding J.J. Newport. He served one two-year term in that position, and was replaced in 1893 by H.K. Pemberton.

At the time of his death, an obituary noted that Cross had “in all possibility, taught more school Scott County has, or ever will teach.” He spent a total of 47 years teaching school. He was also a candidate for county judge in the 1924 election.

Death

Cross died on Oct. 26, 1926 after being sick for two months. He was 67. He was buried at Silcox Cemetery near his home in the Straight Fork community of eastern Scott County.
