Bailey Cross

Bailey B. Cross (1924-1987) was a World War II veteran and career educator. He was a long-time school principal and served as Scott County School Superintendent in the 1970s.

Biography

Born Oct. 27, 1924, Cross was a lifelong Scott Countian. He was the son of Marion Cross (1886-1964) and Lutempa Carson (1884-1968). He was the great-grandson of Larkin Cross, who was murdered by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. He was one of five children.

He was a resident of the Pine Hill community east of Oneida.

World War II

Cross served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving as an aviation ordinanceman.

Family

Cross married Betty Lou Millsap (1933-2018) in 1952. They had three children: Cindy, Brian and Gregory.

Professional Life

Cross began his career in education as a teacher in the Oneida Special School District. He later served as principal in the Scott County School System before being elected superintendent of schools. He ended his career as an instructor at the Scott County vocational school.

Scott County School Superintendent

Cross was elected Scott County School Superintendent in 1972, replacing Raymond Jeffers. He served until 1980 and was succeeded by Eddie Culver.

Death

Cross died Sept. 11, 1987 at Scott County Hospital. He was 62. A funeral service was held Sept. 14, 1987 at Bethlehem Baptist Church, and he was buried at Cooper Memorial Gardens.
