Archie Lowe

Archie David Lowe (July 12, 1918 – Feb. 19, 1945) was a soldier from Smokey Junction who was killed in Germany during World War II.

Biography

Born July 12, 1918, Archie D. Lowe was the son of Joseph S. Lowe (1880-1969) and Celia Goad (1890-1982). His siblings included Artie Marie Gibson (1922-1993), Violet Mae Kennedy (1924-2013), Leonardo Lowe (1926-1988) and Cleaves Lowe (1928-2017) and Marion Odis Lowe (born 1930).

Archie was the second-great-grandson of Mikel Low, believed to be the first settler of Scott County.

He married Nevada Cross (1922-1981) on Dec. 14, 1940 at Smokey Junction, and they had two children: Rose Lowe (1940-2012) and Glenn David Lowe (1942-1995).

WORLD WAR II

PFC Lowe enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 28, 1944 at Camp Shelby, Miss., and was assigned to the 328th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division. He fought in the European theater of the war. He was killed Feb. 19, 1945 at Saarlouis-Roden in Germany.

Aftermath

PFC Lowe was buried at Riverview Cemetery in the Smokey Junction community.

He received the Purple Heart award. He is listed on the VFW Post 5669 Memorial Wall in Oneida, the Scott County Veterans Memorial in Huntsville, and the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial in Knoxville.

Nevada did not remarry. She died Feb. 19, 1981 and was buried by his side at Riverview. Glenn died in 1995 in Knoxville and is buried at Oak Ridge Memorial Park in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
