Allen Reed

Allen Reed (1846 – June 10, 1863) was a Union soldier from Scott County who died in the Civil War.

Biography

Born in 1846, Allen Reed was the son of Andrew Reed (1823-1904) and Zilpha Buttram (1826-1865). His siblings included Rebecca Reed (born 1849), Clarinda Reed (1851-1945), John Reed (1854-1937) and Granville Reed (1859-1940).

Civil War

Allen was only 16 years old when he enlisted in the Union army on July 12, 1862. He was assigned to Co. F, 7th Tennessee Mounted Infantry. He died of measles in Lebanon, Ky. on June 10, 1963.

Allen had a first cousin, also named Allen Reed (son of Isaac Reed Jr.), who also served in the war. Other members of the Reed family who fought in the war included Allen’s uncles, Campbell County Reed and Harrison Reed, and first cousins, Claiborn Reed, Isaac Reed, Shadrach Reed and Wiley Reed (all four were brothers, the sons of Allen Reed who was Andrew Reed’s brother). Claiborn died during the war.
