1915 Winona train wreck
On March 28, 1915, a train wreck occurred at Winona when a 50-foot-high trestle over Buffalo Creek failed while a train was crossing. One person was killed and four people were injured in the accident.
The accident occurred on the Tennessee Railroad, which had originally been the Paint Rock Coal & Coke Co. Railroad. By 1915 it had been extended from its original terminus at Morning Glory, near Paint Rock, into Campbell County. It followed Paint Rock Creek to New River, then followed New River into Campbell County and, eventually, into Anderson County. The Buffalo Creek Trestle was located at Winona, near where Buffalo Creek empties into New River.
The failure of the wooden trestle caused Engine #24 and Caboose #201 to plunge into Buffalo Creek, killing one person and injuring four others.
It was the first of four fatal train accidents in Scott County between 1915 and 1931, with the others coming in 1925, 1929, and 1931.
