ROBBINS — A 25-year-old Johnson City man died late Sunday from injuries he sustained a day earlier in a near-drowning accident in the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area.

John Gavin Duncan, 25, of Johnson City, was airlifted to University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville after being rescued from the Clear Fork River by friends Saturday morning.

According to Nikki Nicholas, superintendent of the Big South Fork NRRA, Duncan was swimming with friends a quarter mile upstream from Burnt Mill Bridge on Honey Creek Road when he “went under water for several minutes.”
