HUNTSVILLE — Funeral services are expected to be held here Tuesday for former U.S. Sen. Howard H. Baker Jr., who died Thursday afternoon.

According to Rev. Martha Anne Fairchild, pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, the funeral is expected to be held at the church Tuesday. However, the time had not been set as of Thursday evening.

In an email to church members Thursday, Fairchild said the church's sanctuary would be reserved for family members, distinguished guests and close friends during Tuesday's service.

"There will be overflow seating in the fellowship hall but probably not enough for everyone who wants to attend," she said.

Also on Thursday, the University of Tennessee confirmed that Sen. Baker's body will lie in state at the rotunda of the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center on the university's Knoxville campus from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial gifts be made to the UT Baker Center and at least one other cause that they have yet to designate.

  1. Thank you, Dr. C. That's from the paper in the next town over from HB's Huntsville. Dad knew most of the towns in that area from working there on field survey parties in the 1950s, but Huntsville was just too small for him to know.

  2. All who knew Senator Baker admired and respected this great man. He was loved by all. God bless his family.
