HUNTSVILLE — The Scott County Sheriff's Department is seeking the public's help to locate a man who allegedly stole an all terrain vehicle from an Oneida residence.

Derek Scott Harness, 29, of Pioneer, is wanted on a single charge of theft over $1,000 in connection with the ATV theft, which authorities allege happened a month ago.

According to a warrant filed by Sheriff's Department interdiction officer Keith Hawkins, an Oneida woman had the ATV — a Honda 450 — listed for sale on the internet when it was stolen from her home.

Some three weeks later, on May 27, a witness contacted dispatchers at the Sheriff's Department to say that he had seen Harness and another man — Derek Ryan Byrd, 23, of Pioneer — pulling a stolen ATV along Ditney Trail east of Huntsville.

Hawkins allegedly found both suspects taking the stolen ATV apart at Byrd's residence on Charlie Byrd Lane. According to the warrant, the two men claimed that a third man had given them the ATV.

"Derek Byrd claimed that he did not know (the man) but (the man) was willing to just give him a 4-wheeler to borrow for a few days without payment," the warrant stated. "This story did not make any sense to me."

After further investigation, Hawkins sought and obtained arrest warrants for both men. Byrd was arrested on May 29 and charged with theft over $1,000, while Harness remains at large.

Scott County Sheriff Ronnie Phillips said anyone with knowledge of Harness's whereabouts is encouraged to contact the Sheriff's Department at 663-3111.
