James Gilbert (Jim) Scates, 63, of Merritt Island, Florida, passed away February 14, 2014, following a long illness.

Born in Harriman, October 19, 1950, he was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin L. and Geneva G. Scates.

He moved to Florida at age 12, where he attended Edgewood Jr. High and Merritt Island High School. He graduated with a BA from the University of Central Florida. He taught adult education and was a business owner before moving to West Virginia. He was a fried to all, and a long-time member of Merritt Island Presbyterian Church and an elder of the Presbyterian Church in Ona.

He is survived by his sister, Sarah (Joseph) Valimont of Fla.; brothers: Frank (Sherry) Scates of Fla., and Edwin L. (Jan) Scates, III of Tex.; Rosanna (Ed) Phillips of Huntsville, John (Jan) Scates of Oneida, Ron (Johnnie) Ward of Milton, WV, several nieces and nephews, and many other relatives.

His wish was to donate his body to science. A memorial service will be determined at a later date.
