Sgt. Jerry Jasper Lay, U.S. Army Retired, 69, of the Ditney Trail community passed away January 4, 2014, at Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.
Born in Oneida, January 31, 1944, he was preceded in death by his parents, Henry (Lighting) and Amy Lucille Newport Lay; grandchild, Kenneth Poteat; brothers: Charles, Harold, David, Michael, and Buster Lay; and sisters, Oneda McCrady and Janice Lay.
He was a member of Reed Springs Baptist Church and attended Bull Creek Baptist Church.
He entered the military service in May, 1968, and retired after 20 years.
He is survived by his wife, Iva Lee Chambers Lay of the Ditney Trail community; children: Debbie Thompson of Spartanburg, SC, Shirley Lay of Salem, Oregon, and Betty Jo Mozqueda of Columbus, NC; step-children: Star Lay and husband, Mack, Boy Bowling and wife, Gloria, Tim Bowling and wife, Stacey, and Twanna Litton; 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, brothers: Ronnie Lay of Knoxville, and Ricky Lay of Roseburg, Oregon; sisters: Beulah Donoho and husband, Patrick, of Philadelphia, Tenn., and Sharon Sue Mullins, Cheryl Ann Howington and husband, Eric, all of Knoxville; special niece, Darlene Castillo of Nevada; several other nieces and nephews, and many other relatives.
Funeral service was conducted January 6, in the chapel of Four Oaks Funeral Home of Huntsville with Bro. Don Hughett and Bro. Doug Daugherty officiating. Music was provided by Star Lay, Twanna Litton, Macttaela Kidd, Kelci Love, and Bill Chambers. Graveside service was conducted January 7, at Reed Springs Cemetery in Philadelphia, Tenn., with full military honors.
Four Oaks Funeral Home of Huntsville had charge of arrangements.
