HUNTSVILLE — Scott started slow, then improved, in each half of basketball here Tuesday night, but ultimately was edged by Wartburg, 54-50.
Victoria Lloyd scored 13 points and Merry Carson added 12 for the Lady Highlanders, but Kristie Phillips' 17-point effort helped lead the Bulldogs to the non-district win, as Wartburg avenged a loss to Scott from earlier this season.
Monica Roberts was the only Lady Highlander to score in the opening period, tallying seven of her nine points in the first eight minutes. Her 3-point shot was Scott's only field goal in the first period, which saw Wartburg hit three 3-pointers — two of them by Hannah Barnette — and jumped to a 12-7 lead.
Scott clawed back in the second quarter, with Victoria Lloyd hitting two 3-point shots as the Lady Highlanders out-paced Wartburg 17-10 to take a 24-22 lead to the intermission.
But the third quarter was again a slow one, as Scott scored just one field goal — a bucket by Jessica Edwards — to accompany five free throws. Phillips scored eight of her 17 in the third, and Wartburg surged to a 39-31 lead despite hitting only three of 10 free throw attempts in the period.
In the final quarter, Carson scored eight of her 12 points, while Lloyd added seven, but it was too little, too late for the Lady Highlanders, who could not find a way back into the lead.
Scott shot a scorching 88 percent — 14 of 16 — from the free throw line on the night, while seeing Wartburg shoot only 46 percent from the line (10 of 22), but was not able to overcome a 33 percent shooting effort from the field.
Lloyd finished with a double-double, with 10 rebounds to accompany her 13 points, while Montana Phillips added nine boards.
As a team, Scott out-rebounded Wartburg 34-21.
