ELIZABETHTON — Despite being sizable underdogs, No. 6 Scott took No. 3 Elizabethton to the wire in Friday’s opening round of the state Class 4A playoffs here Friday, before ultimately falling, 27-20.

On a night dominated by each team’s running game, Scott (7-4) grabbed an early 7-0 lead, then played Elizabethton (10-1) nearly even the rest of the night, but fell behind by two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, a deficit that would prove too much to overcome.

A few mistakes proved costly for the Highlanders: they had a touchdown wiped off the board in the first half, and the drive resulted in no points. And the Cyclones twice used a short field off of Scott turnovers to score touchdowns.
