HELENWOOD — A home and two nearby buildings were destroyed in a large fire near Highlander Estates here early Saturday morning.

Mid-County Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the fire, on Potter Drive on the west edge of the Highlander Estates subdivision, at about 6:45 a.m. Saturday morning, and was quickly joined on second alarm by firefighters from Huntsville Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to find two buildings, a two-story log cabin and a nearby shop building, fully engulfed. The home and the other property was owned by George "Abe" Baker.

Both of those structures ultimately burned to the ground, along with a garage building behind those two buildings. The garage building contained a fully-restored 1930 Chevrolet Coupe, along with two ATVs and a mower. A pickup truck parked outside the garage was also destroyed by the fire.
