HELENWOOD — Firefighters Monday were investigating the source of a fire that destroyed a vacant mobile home here.

The predawn fire completely destroyed an unoccupied home just north of the Helenwood Post Office and threatened two nearby homes that were occupied.

Huntsville Fire Department was dispatched to the fire just before 5 a.m. Monday morning. Firefighters were joined by a unit from Mid-County Volunteer Fire Department at the scene, near the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 27 and Virgil Cecil Road.

Firefighters found the home completely engulfed in flames upon their arrival. The fire was quickly extinguished, while firefighters hosed down occupied mobile homes — which were evacuated — on either side of the burning structure to prevent the fire from spreading.

Scott County Sheriff's Department and the Scott County Ambulance Service responded to the scene as well.
