Betty Sue Blevins Goertz, 64, of Abingdon, Maryland, passed away in the early afternoon, September 15, 2013, surrounded by her family.
Born in Elgin, she was preceded in death by her parents, Bethel Lee and Nevada Sallie Frogge Blevins;
She grew up in the hills of Tennessee, and graduated from Robbins High School in 1967, where she was a star basketball player for the Hawks. After high school, she joined the United States Coast Guard and was stationed in New London, CT. She worked in the medical profession for more than 40 years; loved gardening, and excelled as an accomplished cook, known to pull 20 slices from just one tomato. She adored her granddaughters, they were the joy of her life. She touched the lives of many people, especially the neighborhood gang, all of whom cherished her.
She is survived by her husband, Philip Goertz of Abingdon, MD; son, Philip Jr. (Jennifer), and granddaughters, Julie and Casey, all of Abingdon, MD; sister, Judy (Robert, Colonel (Dr.) (Ret., USAF) Zalme of Lexington, Ky.; brothers: Darrell (Mandie), and Bethel (Teresa), all of Elgin; several nieces and nephews, and many other relatives.
Memorial service was conducted September 18, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church. Interment followed at St. Mary's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Abingdon, MD.
McComas Funeral Home, Abingdon, MD, had charge of arrangements.
