HUNTSVILLE — The Mayor and Board of Aldermen here Thursday finalized an annexation of some three dozen residences in the Highlander Estates subdivision on the northwest side of the existing town limits, but the annexation's final implementation remained uncertain.

By a 3-1 vote with alderman Jody Newport casting a dissenting vote and alderman Steve Asberry abstaining from voting, the board approved the second and final reading of an ordinance approving the annexation. The vote followed a public hearing in which a handful of the residents impacted by the annexation spoke out against it.

The annexation, which includes homes located on the west side of U.S. Hwy. 27 between the Scott County Visitor Center and Citizens Gas Utility District, is the latest in a series of such moves by the town in recent months.

However, it remains to be seen just when — or if — those homes will officially become part of the town.
